AcuRite 02020 Portable Lightning Detector Black, 2½L x 1W x 2¾H

Quite good for the money. Detects thunderstorms at about 25 miles or less and fairly accurate when compared with lightning portals. Works well on the default setting as delivered.

First things first, it does work and does pick up lightning strikes BUT there's some things you need to take into account. Firstly it's just a basic detector - it's not going to tell you accurately the distance etc because it's just a single unit trying to work out the distance of different strength lightning strikes - even a expensive detector with a fixed single antenna mounted well above any obstructions needs lots of strikes and really good software to work this out. It won't tell you where the storm is in relation to you because it doesn't have a fix antenna (or built in compass and accompanying software) to work out the angle of any strikes to the unit and you. But it does give you a idea there's lightning about and a very rough idea of how far away it could be. I have seen some reviews that say there can be strikes and thunder heard but the unit beeps and says the unit needs moving and doesn't say strike etc - mine did the same until I moved it up above surrounding properties so just like a fix units antenna, it needs to be fairly clear of obstructions. So basically it is what it is - a low cost detector which is good just to have if your out away from all the modern day interference and any solid obstructions.

I’ve tested this device now several times on approaching storms. Had no problems so far. It detects up to 20 miles radius. Great gadget.

I purchased this to take in our caravan as thunderstorms always seem to follow us. This weekend was the first time I was able to test it and it worked after a fashion. It has two modes - Indoor and Outdoor - and certainly picked up the lightning strikes. The warning light flashes and there is a beeping sound at each strike, however the LCD counter seems to get stuck at 3 and eventually tells you to move the unit as it cannot detect anything despite continuing to flash and beep. Comparing the unit to my main lightning detector, the flashing/beeping strike rate indicator and distance indicator seems to be reasonably accurate. As with everything, you only get what you pay for, and the P&P and import duty cost more than the unit itself!

The item arrived today instead of Thursday which was a bonus. Easy set up and use. Only thing I don't like is that you can not register product in the EU.

The device arrived on time and looks a great unit. Upon putting 2 AAA batteries in, I found that the battery cover did not clip in properly at all, the battery cover just kept falling off. Would lose it along with batteries. Rubbish design so sent it back. Shame because had the potential to be so much better. Didn't get a chance to use it. Won't be ordering another. Avoid.

Great gadget, I bought it for my trips to the USA as I’ve been caught out in a number of impressive storms. Good build quality and simple to use.

Great product for detecting lightning. However there are also false indications due to operation of other electrical appliances. The distance setting changing is necessary each time since it does not remember the choice. Some knowledge about the detection principles can help in properly using it.Must for travellers and general people leaving in lightning prone areas. Ok as per price.

Muy sencillo y poco preciso

This is a review of the AcuRite 02020 Portable Lightning Detector. I purchased this lightning detector simply because I find weather interesting and thought it was cool. I'm writing a review because a lot of the other reviewers seem disappointed and that was not my experience.First off, I live in South Florida (USA). We have a lot of lighting storms here.Like others, when you first turn it on, sometimes it reports that it must be relocated. For me, all that was required was to hold it in my hands, maybe move around a little and it would then display 'listening'. This was done inside my third floor apartment standing just inside a large sliding glass door. It was then placed on the floor, next to the door (inside). And then.... I waited. Three or four months past with not a single lightning storm. Then one afternoon the detector started beeping and reporting far off strikes. I use a website that shows a map of the world and reports real time lightning strikes. The website confirmed that a large electrical storm was heading my way. As the storm moved closer, the detector continued to report strikes getting closer. This was well before the lightning was close enough to hear or see. It was dusk / dark by the time the storm was upon my location. Each time a strike hit that I could see, the detector beeped immediately. I have since had several other storms and am convinced the product works as advertised.Battery life seems good (batteries not included) as it has sat on the floor turned on for months. It does report lightning strikes accurately. It beeps loud and flashes red light when lightning is detected. Probably good for outdoor activities or hikers. It is inexpensive for a lightning detector and I am impressed with its accuracy.

Lo tengo desde hace unos meses y a funcionado realmente bien. No detecta todas las descargas, pero lo importante es que las detecte, y a funcionado para presenciar la evolución de algunas tormentas y hasta anticiparlas mientras se van acercando. Eso sí, las interferencias de algunos objetos pueden alterar su correcto funcionamiento. No tenido problemas hasta ahora ¡Lo recomiendo mucho!
