What is the difference between the manual and automatic minime models?

The mini me is automatic. The jovia and piccola are manual machines. With the mini me you insert the pod, select the level of water and press a button. It stops automatically.

does the water swirch off automatically or do you have to decide for yourself manually

Each coffee pod you use is marked with a scale of between 1 and 7, this being the recommended setting for the adjustable water volume lever. However, you can choose to set to a different number if you prefer your coffee stronger or weaker than this recommended setting will produce. Once you have chosen and set to your preferred number, and have operated the start lever, the machine automatically delivers the amount of water needed to give you a delicious coffee at your chosen strength. Experiment with the numbers to find what suits your taste.

does this coffee machine take any brand of pods or is it just the dolce gusto pods that will work with it?

I have this and have used a variety of supermarket own brand pods. Lidl do them for literally half the price of the branded ones as do Asda and the Co-op. They are exactly the same is use and taste so you most definitely don't need to use the Dolce Gusto pods

Do you use a pod for the coffee and a separate pod for the milk to froth on the top afterwards

In the box you get a coffee pod and a top pod unless its an espresso pod. Use top either before or after some recommend milk before, froth happens anyway.
