I have a large head as well and it fits me with it loosened. It is a well made very nice looking hat.

Our Panama hat cap is 4.3 inches high，M size Hat Circumference is about 22.1"-22.8", Brim 2.9"; L size Hat Circumference is about 22.8"-23.6", Brim 2.9"

Q: Can you remove the black ribbon?

You can not remove the black ribbon around the outside of the hat. However you can remove the fitted ribbon under the neck. Hope that helps!
