Q: how does it work without a clamp?

You twirl your hair around it from top to bottom and hold onto the end of the strand with your fingers. They supply a heat proof glove so your fingers don't get singed. It's less cumbersome than dealing with a clamp. Really quick too.

Q: I have a different conical curling wand but find my hair slides down it when i wrap it round- its really annoying! Does this happen with this one?

This wand has quite good grip and shouldn't cause the hair to slide down the wand.

Yes, don't hold the hair on too long and it'll give you loose curls.
