MXL MXL-770 Small Diaphragm Condenser Microphone, Black, 8.00 x 4.00 x 12.00 inches

This is an indoor/home studio recording mic and I'm really impressed with it. I have several other mics that are more expensive and several recording devices and mic audio interfaces with which to use it; including Roland, Zoom and Focusrite. All of which have 48v phantom power, which this mic needs. I've used it to record voice, acoustic guitar, whistle and with less success an Anglo concertina (really needs a compressor in processing). I mount it on any one of a number of K&M (topline) mic stands, and always use its included shock absorption mount or a K&M one I also have. I've never used the pad switch as I generally have -10db and -20db available on the mic interface - and once in the shock mount it can be a little fiddly to switch in. Although I prefer to process a raw signal I have occasionally used the low cut (high pass) filter when I've known there would be an overwhelming bass output due to the proximity effect of the placement with a very bassy instrument. I use it with both the foam hood and a K&M pop shield, mainly to protect the mic from over zealous singing and keep the singers mouth away from the mic. It stores away in a nice protective plastic injection moulded case with some kind of shaped foam insert.On both acoustic guitar and singing voice (limited range) I find it gives a very faithful representation of the source sound (at the price). As a next step to improving recordings from this mic, rather than buy a "better" more expensive condenser, I'll probably look at finding a compatible figure of eight mic to let me record in mid-side stereo mode using this MXL770 as a very strong mid. I also spend a lot of money in keeping my ears in good order and regularly tested.

Great sound quality. Good low end and the mid/high frequencies are clear and crisp. Great for singers, and podcasting but especially for rappers or heavy metal vocals. I love it and use it more than some more expensive microphones I own.

Comes in a nice black case for carrying around to your mates...The mic is Bigger in size than expected compared to sssh audio techniques it’s naturally a bit bright on recording...But I’ve only had it a week... lol.

I needed a good quality mic for voice overs on my YouTube channel.I had originally bought a dynamic mic, and after realising it was not the best for VO, I purchased this Condenser mic from MXL.It’s a great mic, comes with a great hard case, and shock mount. It has definitely increased the quality of my voice overs!Bear in mind it dies require phantom power, so you will need an audio interface of some kind, but it’s a really great mic for the money!

I stumbled upon a used MXL 770 on Amazon for £55, so after some demos and reading, I bought it.Now, I used to run a studio and have engineered in several so I have used U87s, AKG414s, Rode NTV - all the big boys - so I was prepaired for the worst.However, the MXL 770 does not disappoint - true it's not as good as my NTV was (ex studio) but it IS good. Very good. It's quiet, articulate, sensitive and above all, it's clear and detailed. I bought it for vocals and I really like it. It is not overly warm ... not as warm as the Neumanns, not as bright as the AKG414 - to my surprise I felt it to be somewhere in between, and those are two good mics to be in between! Very happy with it. The only disappointment was that, due to mine being previously owned, it did not come with any documentation or the spare elastics for the shock mount. But it was in mint condition.Tested with a Focusrite Saffire interface with 48 volts phantom power and into Pro Tools.

This is a great mic for the money. Very crisp clear recordings with plenty of depth. I use it with a pop-shield which I do think is essential (not only to reduce 'pops', but also to protect the mic from moisture as condenser mics are easily damaged by moisture). The unit is well made and feels like a very solid classy piece of kit. Comes in a nice carry case too for extra protection. Very pleased with my purchase, and all the research I did before committing to the MXL 779 has paid off.
