Illustrated Grimm's Fairy Tales (Usborne Illustrated Story Collections)

The best fairy tale book, in story and illustration, for children under 10
This is my 3.5 year old’s new favourite book – I think in the last 2 months she has only requested a different book 3 times at bedtime – it’s that good. The fairytales are the old stories, buta) Told in slightly simplified languageb) Slightly updated for modern language patternsThe stories’ wording is just right for young ones and I hardly have to tweak any of it when reading aloud (unlike other books such as Beatrix Potter when I have to paraphrase nearly all of it) for a little listener. The stories are just the right length for one or two a night. Of course the girls always need rescuing by a prince which is tedious, but that’s not the fault of this edition :)The illustrations are lovely, the reason I chose this above other fairy tale compendiums. They are not childish or simple, they are rich in colour and lovely to look at. The text/font is also very legible so it will be good too for when she starts to read herself.

Great if somewhat darker stories for children
I grew up on Grimms fairy tales and this book of multiple tales is outstanding. Perfect sized book and such beautiful artwork that brings everything to life. Darker stories than may be for some parents tastes for their little ones, but there are lessons in each and every story. From the feel of the cover, drawings and quality of the text this is a must buy and I would highly recommend for anyone that is a fan. I would probably only say your child may not be too interested until they are at least 2 years old as there is a lot of text to read to them.

Great Bedtime Read
Great book for traditional style stories. Some but not that many illustrations, which for us is the best balance as showing the pictures doesn't interrupt the story too much. Each story is between 15-40 pages long which equates to about 10-20 minutes reading time, which is about perfect for our son. Most of the stories will be familiar to everyone - Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Rapunzel, but there were certainly a few that were new to both myself and my wife. The book itself is a good size to balance on the knee while a child is on the other one, smaller than A4 but bigger than A5 and has a useful ribbon for marking a page. As with all Usborne books its feels solidly made and the illustrations are lovely. It does lose a star for as I assume that the stories had just been copied from the original source with little to no editing. Whilst our lad positively relishes some of the gorier bits in some of the tales (Red Riding Hood has issues...) I can understand if the parents of more sensitive souls wanted to gloss over certain bits. You'll also find yourself editing on the fly as you read aloud as some of the sentence structure is odd to modern ears.Overall, an excellent addition to our bedtime armoury.
