It depends on if you feel competent on fitting this on the door you are using . If the door is expensive I suggest you get a carpenter to fit it for you .

How big can the gap be between the door and the frame for this to be effective?

I would say almost as wide as the roller protrudes from it's housing bracket. The spring is very strong, in fact too much for our use so an alternative was sourced. You wouldn't need much compression on the roller for it to hold a door shut securely, and to be latched closed easily.
