I’ve been using this medicated shampoo a couple of times a week to help with an itchy, flaky scalp and it really does calm things down. I bought this shampoo for my boyfriend as he developed dry and flaky skin in some areas of his scalp. It took some time, but it worked very well and his scalp is thriving. The only thing I find important to mention is that I used it a few times and it slightly removed the colour from my hair, but it might be because I boxed dyed it, so it might be because of the quality of the dye. I often get stressed easily and my head becomes itchy and irritant. I don't know if I get stressed because my head is itchy, or my head is itchy because I'm stressed or both, but all I know is that I experience it a lot and requires me to take a little break from whatever I am doing. I was desperate to fix this, so I found this. Upon opening the box, they make sure it's known to you that it contains tar gel. I don't really know what it is, but I can say that I initially was quite worried as the first thing that came to mind was what roads were made of. I have used a whole bottle and I can say that this hasn't affected me negatively, although this could still affect someone else. Some people dislike the smell, but I actually like it. It is indeed very strong of a smell, and I can see it being really annoying if you don't like it. I think that it smells quite medicinal. The texture is quite thick when coming out of the bottle. It doesn't flow out like most normal shampoo would but more like squeezes out. I had no problems applying this to my head/hair. Does it work? I'm fairly certain it's closer to the NO side than it is to the yes side. Reason being is that I didn't really feel any physical change, and when I think about my head being itchy, then I do start feeling it. The problem with this is that the more you think about your head, the worse it gets. When it's nagging you in your mind and can't think about anything else/put your mind aside to the thought of your head being itchy, I feel it's almost impossible to just 'un-think it'. I needed something to take my mind of it. Something that would keep my mind at rest thinking that the shampoo was doing something - the placebo effect. I do get the occasional feeling, but it's much less now, and now that it happens less frequently, I also think about it less. I am now currently at the stage where I am aware that it is mostly in my mind and that the product was mostly a placebo effect, and I now feel like this feeling of 'being aware of the placebo effect, has helped me start to not become as stressed in regard to my head, and as a result think about it less. So yes, it didn't fix my problem but got most of the way there, and probably not by the intended method. It's worth noting that a lot of my problems had connections to temperature, heat especially. When I had longer hair, when I ran to a bus and sat down, inside a cramped hall etc... Having colder showers may get you quite the way there...

Smelt just like the old Vosene and worked in making my hair fresh and itchiness gone .I don't use it every wash just when my hair gets itchy with build up off hair treatments.

They've definitely changed the smell at some point over the years and it now smells disgusting like an old shoe at a museum, some might say tar like but it used to smell medicated with a hint of mint or something fresh. It still does the job but use a second shampoo over the top to disguise the smell but you will still smell it a bit in your hair. Luckily it's only for temporary or sporadic use.
