what is the minimum watts? (max described as 400w)

I quite happily use 100W, 60W, 55W and 40W bulbs with mine, any lower and it's probably not worth using a dimmer switch. I get good range at 40W in my bedroom but use a brighter bulb in my front room and drawing room. Remember this item is not suitable to use with low energy saving bulbs!

Does an ordinary bulb work for this switch ?

I am using clear candle halogen bulbs E14 42W. They are fine with the dimmer switch.

Does this dimmer simply replace the normal on off switch

Yes u can just press for on/off or turn for brighter/dimmer! But not all light bulbs dim so check which bulbs do! Hope this helps a bit x
