I only bought this because it's the only one you can use
I think this prodict isn't really great. It's something GoPro cound have done a better job of making. It feels like the department that created this product was on tight time, and rushed this out. When plugged into the GoPro it works flawlessly. No need to do anything, really. And the audio quality is fine.But...It's so bulky. It just hangs on the GoPro.One solution to this problem is buying a GoPro case that has a mount for this USB-C 'audio box' and it then gets tucked nicely near the GoPro.Secondly, I own a GoPro Karma Grip and this does NOT work at all with the Karma Grip! What an awful oversight on GoPro's part! The audio on the Karma Grip is sub-par, and being able to plug in a mic to it externally would have been absolutely perfect. Oh well...In the GoPro options for this adapter you have:- Standard Mic- Standard Mic+- Powered Mic- Powered Mic+- Line inI recommend 'Standard Mic' for something like the Rode VideoMic Go. 'Sarndard Mic+' is the same as 'Standard Mic' but has a 20dB boost in audio. This is something that you can always do in post, and will actually reduce your loudness range.'Powered Mic' is for mics like the Rode VideoMic Go, which has a small internal bettery. The '+' version is, again, a 20dB boost. And 'Line-in' is when the mic has it's own line-in power which is significantly more and does not require further amplification unlike 'Powered Mic' which has a much lower impedance.Overall it's not great but if you want to plug in an external mic it's necissary, unfortunately...

Will work with Hero 8 Black but you'll need a battery door adaptor.
Although the Hero 8 Black isn't listed as compatible, this will work with it.The problem is that the in-port on the Hero 8 Black is sealed behind the waterproof battery door. The port itself will however connect to this mic adaptor (remember to alter the input settings on the camera, and use the on/off switch before use - not the quickstart option).I'd recommend the Ulanzi G8-7 Battery Cover to secure the battery in place whilst allowing access to the port for the Mic Adaptor on a Hero 8 Black. The obvious and major downside is that your Hero 8 Black will no longer be waterproof if you're using this mic adaptor, but for some situations that may not be a consideration.By the way, GoPro's own solution, the GoPro Media Mod is also not waterproof, so the mic adaptor is an equally compromised but viable alternative if you're looking for a smaller form-factor than the Media Mod.

Expensive solution
Works well but it's unnecessary bulk for an action camera just to plug an essential external mic.

I Can tell this Adaptor was an After though...
Okay firstly lets just say... Yes it does the job.... Well Done GoPro!But now lets take a look at the OBVIOUS profiteering GoPro are conducting here... £44.99 for 3 inches of Wire, a 90 Degree type C USB head connector and a HUGE (It's half the size of the camera) box, Containing as i'm what GoPro would say is... Technical and essential... which allows you to then connect a 3.5mm Jack or a Type C USB to your device...The Build quality is good a robust however the box on the end is a nightmare to fit onto your device and without using an elastic band it will mearly hang precariously at the bottom of your camera. For £44.99 I'd at least Expect a couple of fancy elastic bands or Velcro straps for me to attach this audio lunch box to my Go pro rig. However No, Its like GoPro didn't even think about mounting this monster and just decided to pump this out last minute for those who need one... Now I know you maybe thinking "But, I can just buy a cheaper Type C to 3.5mm Jack on Amazon" WRONG!... You NEED this one.... No other lead will work! If you want an external Microphone with your Hero 5 Then you best put your children on Rations for this month because you have to buy this one as its the only compatible device with the Hero5....

Worth the money
Thought it was a bit pricey at first, but when it arrived it has that reassuring tough build quality you expect from GoPro. This isn't some cheap fiddly accessory that's going to break in a year.I mainly use it with a Rode mic for vlogging, either indoors or outdoors with a dead cat on the Rode. I can also directly connect my lav mic into the GoPro which is really neat. There's a USB C connection so you can still charge the camera. While not the most exciting or glamorous bit of kit I've bought, it's opened up some options to me to get some great footage outdoors with much more professional sounding audio than the on board camera, especially for speech.

This does not work with go pro hero 5 intermittent only works when it wants to.
The go pro adapter does not function properly with my go pro hero 5 after purchasing 3 different microphones thinking that this was the cause.

Expensive but good.
It works with my Hero 8, improving the quality of sound substantially using a good mic.Too expensive for what it is, just a money spinner for Gopro. Hard to recommend unless it's a vital purchase. Really should be incorporated into the Gopro itself.

If you want just a little better sound quality then you will have to pay another £50 for it.
If you want to improve the sound quality using your go pro hero Black 7 then unfortunately there is no other choice,Having paid more than £300 + for this go pro hero 7 black it is money enough,I believe go pro left this feature out deliberately so in order to make even more money on their products.I believe they are just like apple wanting to have total control over all of their products & not allowing any 1/3 party to offer a cheaper alternative To use.
