The title, as cliched as it might seem, really does nail it. This isn't a book on how to learn some boogie woogie songs or licks, this is a book about learning how to play the style of boogie woogie piano. The basics are condensed into 8 fundamental licks complete with several variations and examples, and they're presented in the context of learning to identify by ear these basic elements in songs you want to learn which then makes it easy to recreate and adapt them to a style that is your very own. There's some great advice on practice too, which I love, as well as some historical and contextual support to help you frame your approach in a way that is relaxed and not attached to exact replication, but instead to creative and true-to-yourself expression. Very well done. The layout is intuitive and the instruction is simple and clear. This guy's obviously got some experience teaching. There are a handful of misprints that are obvious to anyone with basic music knowledge. The corrections I just saw are listed in one of the comments below by the author if you want to be sure to catch them all. This is the second boogie woogie book I've gotten since starting to learn this style earlier this year and it's hands down the better road map. For all you Sound Opinions fans out there- this is definitely a "buy it" book!

Liked the entire book and what I expected and more!

My son and his teacher are using this book as a blues curriculum and it's been a lot of fun to watch. Recommended! There aren't songs to learn in this book. Instead, it's full of bass lines, chord progressions, licks, and other concepts that will get you creating your own music.

If you want to learn the basics of boogie woogie piano, buy this book. There are 130 audio tracks to download to help assure that you are playing what's on the printed page. It's like having an instructor in your hip pocket. As with any musical instrument, it is going to require practice. You will get the most benefit if you already know how to read music. This is not for the beginner. I only had one year of piano lessons 70 years ago. I'm on track #18

I really like how this book lays out a method for learning boogie and blues style piano. The lessons work very nicely with the instructor's you tube videos for more visual learners. It's only been a couple of months, and I've already worked through the 8 basic licks and have been noticing them when listening to music in my car. It's really cool! I also like how the instructor has 3 levels of instruction- beginning, intermediate, advanced- for each basic lick and shows you how to vary the licks and what you will be able to accomplish eventually as you progress. You probably need to have a bit of basic knowledge on how to read sheet music if you are just sticking to the book and sound clips. It helped me to review the musical notation when I was too lazy to slow down the you tube videos- just to see the exact fingering on some of the variations. A great introduction to the style!

You do need to have a certain level of piano-playing experience to use this book. It’s not for bare beginners. But if you know your chords, and you’ve had some experience improvising and coordinating left hand patterns with right hand melodies, you are ready to try this book. I am impressed with the depth of instruction in the various technicalities of playing Boogie Woogie. It has online tracks, which I haven’t tried to access yet, because I just received the book, but I wanted to write a review right away, seeing how much I will benefit from all the instruction here. Left hand patterns, stride patterns, licks, progressions, blues scales, how to play by ear, improvisations, in the style of…, etc. I really look forward to going through this book, as I can see that it will greatly benefit my knowledge of Boogie Woogie, and enhance my general ability to play jazz and blues! For the price, you do get a lot of instruction!

Would have preferred a CD instead of having to use internet for examples.

Il libro è ben fatto e ti insegna passo per passo, è in lingua inglese quindi bisogna conoscerla. Inoltre è opportuno possedere un minimo di conoscenza del pianoforte, ciò aiuta perché lo stile musicale è rapido ed ostico soprattutto per chi è alle prime armi. Naturalmente imparare lo stile boogie woogie necessita di tanto impegno e questo è in controtendenza con i tempi moderni del tutto e subito! Ritengo però che in questa epoca di musica elettronica facile, ritornare a FARE musica è una sfida ma molto gratificante.

Les morceaux sont variés et franchement de très bonne qualité. La plupart des méthodes que j'ai pu essayer restent assez "scolaires", mais ici les exemples rendent très bien. À condition d'y passer le temps nécessaire : le niveau technique est plutôt élevé, pour moi en tout cas.

Un libro estupendo para los que aún no dominamos el piano. Con ejercicios desde principiantes a nivel avanzado, con el saber hacer del Sr. Migliazza.
