Albums: 1968-1972

I ordered this on a bit of a whim -- I have older versions of most of these albums and I could always listen on streaming. But it was inexpensive...and I am just blown away. Hearing bonus tracks is nice, but not that exciting. But the remastering...oh my. What I can hear now just blows me away. And listening on good-but-not-super headphones...revelatory. The balance between the magnificent rhythm section (Thompson and Cox), the guitarists+ (Jansch and Renbourn) and the extraordinary vocals of Jacqui McShee (with strong contributions by Jansch and occasionally others) is simply breathtaking. Put another way -- Pentangle used to be one of my top ten groups; they're now number two (sorry, hard to beat out the Beatles). Simply hearing these albums amazes me. If you're thinking, "I don't really like folk music", rest assured. They're not just that. Give them a chance...and then buy this and be blown away.

Pentangle was so unique and talented, so to be able to get all of their 6 albums with numerous outtakes and versions was fantastic. I thought the sound was also excellent and the booklet well done. All of this at a great price as well. Very satisfied.

When i lived in San FRancisco as a student, i would hear these guys on the radio, always wondering who they were...I tried to find vinyl lps of Pentangle, no luck there. Then i discovered they were available here! Oh Amazon! you did good! This group will put to rest, for a while anyway, the madding world around you. The Pentangle is for sure an acquired taste..but they get my vote!

I have the LP's and wanted a better format. This was reasonably priced for the whole set of original albums. The "extra" material was not significantly innovative, but nice renditions of songs on the same or another album.

This is about all you will ever need from the band. All of the albums and the extra live show have great, dynamic sound. The packaging for the albums mirrors the vinyls in smaller form. Some gatefolds, a couple card-style replicas along with a detailed book with photos and information about the band's eras. It's all housed in a compact slipcase design that looks good and doesn't take up too much space. Each album has an abundance of bonus tracks, but the big find here is the live disc from Festival Hall. It has intimate and detailed sound, plus it gives you a very fine look into the band at this time during their most popular period's birth in the Sweet Child era. If you ever wanted a great collection of some of the best folk ever made, it's here at a reasonable price.

(THE BOX) The small box is 5" 1/4 x 5"1/4 x 1"7/8 inches deep. The mini-album replica sleeves are cardboard. (BOOKLET) Informative liner notes, loads of photos and ads addressing the rise of the band to a surprising, unexpected end. Also a near complete concert listing from the time period. (CDs) Six VG releases. If a listener thinks of Pentangle as a slow steady decline, try reverse order. "Solomon's Seal", "Reflection" and "Cruel Sister" hold up to the regions best - ie. Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Trees and Mellow Candle. They became more traditional less jazzy in their approach. (SOUND) The previous Castle reissues were actually pretty good except for "Basket Of Light" which came close to a feel of a closed metal trash can. Much improved in this release on vocals, instruments and nuances. The rest of the albums are remastered slightly better in treble, high quality. (BONUS TRACKS) For fans only. Alternate takes have a nice fit. Bootleg songs are frustrating. I prefer non-group projects on separate discs like on the "Pentangling" box set where the flow stays more intact. (CONCLUSION) Pentangle was a special kind of band fusing jazz, blues, folk and pop like no other. Their 2nd release "Sweet Child" represents a talented well oiled machine right from the get go whether it was live in concert or in the studio. Six albums was just enough as the band members grew tired of each other and world touring. This box set is a closure. Essential only for Pentangle collectors.

wow, waited a few weeks to get these shipped from the UK. box came ok and discs were all shiny and new. but extracting audio so I can make mp3 or flac from it - that was so error prone! my older plextor drive would not get all the last tracks on most of the discs. I'm not sure any of the 7 were perfect, all had flaws in getting audio out. what a shame. now I have to return these back to the UK (at least there's a shipping label provided.) I really wish they would have stamped these at a quality factory. even a burned cdrom would probably read better than these discs.

Résumer un si beau coffret en quelques mots, purement impossible. La QUINTESSENCE du folk jazz english ces gens là ! Vous l'avez compris, je les aime d'amour ces excellents musiciens. Ils s'en vont tous petit à petit (à l'heure de la rédaction de ce commentaire, 3 des branches du Pentangle ont rejoint les cieux) et nous laissent tristes et orphelins. Mais ils nous laissent leur musique, qui elle ne meure pas, et devient même de plus en plus vivante. Ami(e), face à ce coffret, il te faut faire un choix : n'en acheter qu'un pour toi ou plusieurs pour offrir autour de toi. Bref, voilà un achat que je ne regrette absolument pas. Le son est superbe, les chansons magistrales... Du régal 24 carats....Pentangle, en somme.

If Pentangle are unknown to you, I urge you to discover them! They are totally unique, from a time in the late 60s and early 70s when the frontiers of music were being pushed into new directions and anything seemed possible. This CD box set is an essential addition to any music lover's collection. Beautifully remastered and with an immaculate booklet of information and press cuttings, this is an absolute bargain, each cd costing less than £7 each. And all their albums are great, you are buying quality music that is really quite timeless.

Un cofanetto che contiene i sette capolavori di questo straordinario gruppo, ognuno con inediti e outtakes. Una collezione di gemme, arricchita da un bellissimo libretto. Ogni cd ha la sua confezione, è quindi agevole anche l'estrazione senza danneggiarli. Uno dei migliori cofanetti che possieda, una raccolta di capolavori di un mito della musica contemporanea.

This box is with the original group with Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Danny Thompson, Terry Cox and Jacqui McShee from the period 1968-1972. A nice package with 7 CD’s with lots of bonus tracks on all of them (one is a 2–CD too). All are in digipak covers like the original LP’s. This is the best period with the Pentangle. The sound quality is also excellent. Had some LP’s (vinyl) when they were released, but sold them. Now I’m very glad when I found this box. The enclosed booklet (many pages) is very informative too. I recommend this one!
