Does the timer have to stay on? can you just turn them on and off manually?

Dear customer, when you turn on the switch, the timer is staying on. It will keep lighting ON for 6 hours, then lighting OFF and enter into the standby mode, and it will light ON again after 18 hours, so it will 24 hours cycle work. You can also turn them off manually.

Are the “flames” wiggly or rigid?

The flames are rigid. they flicker inside a little.
