Exactly what I needed.
This review is for the Vantec CB-ST00U3 NexStar USB 3.0 to SATA 6Gbps Optical/Storage Adapter After my music hard drive failed, and I lost all my FLAC CD rips, I needed something to hook up an old DVD optical drive so I could start ripping CDs again. I don't have an optical drive in my main PC (NZXT H440), and I wanted an external option I could use across multiple computers. This fits the bill nicely. Small and portable so I can throw it in a bag, and cheap enough to be soft on my wallet (external 5.25 enclosures are $50? What?). As a plus, I could use it with any hard drive or SSD as well. Also, USB 3.0 speeds rock. Plus, plus plus. Not all is perfect, though: The adapter block is small, but it has no support of its own. It's not heavy by any means, but the entire weight of it is supported by my DVD drive's SATA and SATA power ports. This may or may not be an issue if you plan to leave it plugged into a 5.25: drive for an extended period. This probably isn't an issue with a 3.5" hard drive, due to drive thickness. The cords are short, especially the USB cord. This seems to be an industry standard for USB 3.0 peripherals - super short USB cord. Overall, though this is a net positive. Windows 10 recognized my DVD drive right away, and I'm ripping CDs all day long with AcurateRip.

Enables usage of CD/DVD RW drives from old PC's on Laptops.
Had to retire my over 10 year old PC but wanted to keep the CD/DVD Read/Write drives. My solution was the Vantec SATA storage adapter with USB 3.0. I removed the CD/DVD drives from my PC and connected one of them to the SATA port on the Vantec adapter. Plugged the USB 3.0 cable into my Laptop (also connect to a Laptop docking station when using another Laptop). It just started working with no drivers, etc. Couldn't have been easier and now I am able to run applications, play music and create picture DVD's using any application that can see a CD or DVD in Windows 10 or 11. The performance appears to be better than it was in my old PC, which is probably due to the USB 3.0 connectivity. The adapter also supports SATA hard drives, but I have not utilized it for that purpose. However if I need it in the future, the specs says that Vantec SATA adapter supports any SATA drive. So for the $20 this is the best solution that I've found and highly recommend it to anyone.

Definitely worth it.
I bought this because I upgraded my PC and case (which didn't have a 5 1/4 bay) and needed to continue to utilize a 4k internal drive I have. I 3d printed my own enclosure for this and it works like a charm. I haven't clocked the transfer speed for backups, but it's not really a concern for me. There is no issue with connectivity as it worked out of the box no issued with Windows 11. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to keep their internal drive.

Works as expected with one big flaw
Very handy adapter, given that more and more computer cases do not offer an optical drive bay. Since I only use my optical drive about once a month, I can understand why. This adapter gives me the ability to hook up my optical drive for use on those rare occasions. Works well. Hooked it up and my PC recognized the drive immediately. Love the rubber mat that comes with it. Great idea by Nexstar. Keeps from scratching any surface you place the drive on. Now on to the flaw. The power adapter cord is too short at only about 4' long. Given that your PC placement and wall outlet, combined with the fact that you most likely will be placing the optical drive on your desktop, the cord should be at least 6' long, preferably 7-8'. The cord would not reach my wall outlet, so I had to run a 6' extension cord to it. Just what I wanted, more wires (pure sarcasm). This is why I gave only 2 stars to the "easy to use" feature. The manufacturer was really short sighted on the cord length (or cheap).

Reliable and Versatile USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter
Purchase two in order to use a Blu Ray Writer (yes I know it’s old tech but I still very much use physical media for various things) and a external Drive. Works absolutely flawlessly with both. Windows picked up both devices first time. Build quality is solid and over all I have to say the product is reliable and does exactly what it was designed to do. If you need an easy way to connect SATA optical drives or storage devices via USB, this is a great option.

Preforms well.
Have used it with a Plextor DVD-RW drive, a Seagate 8TB HDD and a Samsung QVO 2TB SSD. All have performed well with no compatibility issues. The unit I got did have the power adapter failed after 4 power cycles. Not a big deal as I have lots of 12v 2A adapters. I did notify Vantec; the rep was very friendly and helpful. I explained there was no need to send a new supply, but the rep insisted and sad it is part of their service when our product is defective and in warranty. Long story short. Defective power supply, company backups their warranty.

Doesn’t work to burn a CD-R or DVD-R
I have a LG WH16NS40 Blu-ray writer that has been used in my old Win 10 desktop. My desktop is too old to upgrade to Win 11. I planned to use this adapter to make an external Blu-ray writer with my LG WH16NS40. This adapter works for reading data CDs, DVDs and playing Blu-ray movies with both my new Win 11 laptop and my old Win 10 desktop via USB 3.0. Unfortunately, it didn’t work to burn a data CD-R or DVD-R with my new Win 11 laptop. And it even didn’t work to burn a data CD-R with my old Win 10 desktop that had my LG WH16NS40 as an internal drive originally. I have tried many times with both my computers. I had the same problem that one reviewer mentioned "Doesn't sustain connection". See the error in the screenshot. Somehow, the adapter gets disconnected as soon as the writer starts to burn. I gave it 3 stars because it plays Blu-ray movies via USB 3.0 with both my computers.

My PC case has no provision for an optical drive, I bought this so I could use my Blue-Ray Writer and it works perfectly just as if it were connected internally.

It does exactly what it says and managed to see my old 5 1/4 inch Blueray drive as a DVD and Blueray drive. As a bonus it also managed to access a 3 1/2 inch SATA 3 hard disk as a hard disk. It also runs both at full USB 3 speed (if your PC has a USB3 port) Is just a dongle so no enclosure but much cheaper because of that I did ask US technical suport about the enclosed power supply and they responded fast with an answer to my questions on plug dimensions for an alternate UK power supply I was lucky that I already had a mains adapter plug to go from the enclosed US 2 pin power supply to a UK plug. They only sell the US version of the product and it comes from amazon US. Delivery was reasonable timewise.

This USB/SATA adapter uses the excellent JMicron JMS578 chip, and not one of the underwhelming ASMedia chips that some of the competing adapters use. This means that this adapter gives you proper UASP speed/functionality on the Linux mainline kernel, currently at 5.18. Something you're unlikely to get from an adapter using an ASMedia storage chip when using Linux. I can confirm this works on a 12TB 3.5 HD. Other things that stand out about this adapter is that the USB cable is removable, it has a built in on/off toggle switch, and they didn't cheap out on the 12V adapter power cable length, like the last competing adapter like this I bought. This USB to SATA adapter checks all the boxes: - Uses the JMicron JMS578 USB storage controller, so it is UAS compatible on Linux for the fastest transfer speeds. - Removable USB cable. - Decent length of cable on the 12V power adapter. - Power switch on the device. - Works with a 12TB hard drive.

Muy buen adaptador, pude conectar sin ningún problema una unidad BluRay interna, y funcionó correctamente, como si fuera externa. Lo volvería a comprar sin duda!
