If I'm understanding your question, I 6the remote 'controls' the Fire TV device, but the latter should normally be connected and powered on. The remote can put the Fire unit into standby mode, but I don't believe it actually powers it on and off.

No sadly not, i also accidently keep hitting the apps i never subscribe too, so this would have been a much better design to deactivate the buttons etc, possibly in future from a software update, but really they should have just made the 4 buttons at the bottom customisable instead... (i feel they are somewhat obliged to have them following a deal with the companies etc)
