So the first pair of scissors I received was actually not the best quality. They were perfectly functional and sharp, but the brass fittings were heavily tarnished and looked pretty rough. The leather case also had a dimple in the seam. However, I emailed the company about the issues and David went above and beyond to correct it. He sent a new pair out to me very quickly, and this one is in much better shape. Still sharp and cuts beautifully, and the brass fittings look really good for the most part (there’s some light tarnishing around the ridged edges of the tensioning knob, and if it were my company I would be having a conversation with my manufacturer about the QC issues, but from an aesthetic standpoint I can live with it and I’m pretty ocd about these things). So even though it was a rough start, I believe in supporting companies that do right by their customers, and Beard & Bates has proven that they will. Given this experience and that I now have a good looking pair in my hands, I can wholeheartedly recommend these scissors.

Sharp, great steele andperfect for travel

I had always used inexpensive and short beard shears, I just lost the one I was using and decided to see what else existed. I came across this pair and was a tad hesitant due to the cost, but the description sold me. The adjustable tension is awesome, a high grade steel, and the little finger thing whatever seemed handy. Well I got them today and took them for a test run on my stash. Holy crap, I didn't know what I was missing! These are so controllable and are great for getting a longer straight cut if needed. I appreciate the tension control as it lets me get a bit more precise with it, and the finger thing helps me keep the shears positioned well. On top of all that, these cut liker a MFer, no snagging a whisker with the tip of the blade anymore. Honestly, I'm not going back to cheap peices of crap anymore, these are amazing!

The product is high quality and so far it’s holding its sharpness. It’s definitely changed my beard game for the better and helped me shape and keep it nice and clean. I would say that the only thing to watch for is if you have larger thumbs that they may not be as comfortable for a long period of time as the hole is a little small.

After committing long-term to a newly grown beard and mustache in early 2020, I decided to invest in a decent pair of scissors as a compliment to the electric trimmer I was using weekly. Once I’d read the online reviews, I ordered the Beard & Bates 1878 shears, which arrived in an attractive cardboard box tied with a piece of twine. I use them almost daily to trim my mustache, beard, and the occasional sideburn. The ‘brass finger rest’ on the end of one of the handles improves stability during use. The scissors have maintained their sharpness and the small adjusting knob at the axis has proven handy in dialing in the resistance level. The leather holster accompanying it is nothing ornate, but it does provide useful protection for the scissors when traveling with them. Speaking of which, mine were confiscated by Jamaican airport security at the end of a vacation this past December. (The shears comply with U.S. TSA restrictions regarding carry-on items; however, I hadn’t considered that Jamaica might have more stringent restrictions!) While still in the airport waiting to board, I went online and ordered an identical set of shears, which arrived several days later and which I’ve been using with as much enjoyment as I had using the first pair.
