These are much better to use than the ratcheting style, and you do not have to cut the fencing wire and crimp the tensioner on. Time will tell to see how they hold up as this is the first I have used them. I did break one when using it for an H brace fence post tensioner, but it was my fault as I got it caught in one of the other legs of the wire and did not realize it.They are kind of awkward to do by yourself and hold tension in place one handed while installing the keeper pin, but I was using a 1/2" socket ratchet to tighten them. If using a different style tool, such as what they sell or design yourself it might be easier, or just have another person install the pins as you hold the tension in place. But it C AN be done by yourself.I am curious to see if water getting into the tool attachment cavity will freeze and cause any issues, we are coming into winter here so will find out soon! I did try to install them so the cavity faced down, but some of the fence lines did not cooperate and the cavity faces up and will get water in it, but due to the design of the tensioner they are all at an angle at least.

These are designed to tighten a fence without cutting the wire. They work by having a kind of 'groove' deep enough for the wire to fit inside and then wind around the spool as you turn it. The groove is just large enough to fit double strand barbed wire, which is what I use it for more than anything else. I have also used it for high tensile electric wire, which is probably what it was designed for.To tighten you either use their special tool designed just for the job, or you can use a 1/2" drive ratchet. Do NOT use a breaker bar as it will swivel as you are trying to tighten it and that will cause it to slip. Whatever you use to tighten it must be rigid as it will try to twist as you tighten it, and a ratchet works pretty well as it prevents the twist yet allows you to advance the ratchet to tighten it farther. To hold the wire tight, you install a heavy wire shaped kind of like a horseshoe through the holes in the outer rim of the spool to catch against the wire so it cannot unspool. This can be done by one person, but is much easier with two. The installation requires patience and a little bit of figuring out to get the ratchet set right so it doesn't twist as you pull, but once installed I've never had an issue as far as coming loose or lack of strength, even in a 4 wire barbed wire fence with cattle pushing against it. The inline ratchets are easier to use, as they self ratchet as you tighten, but do not allow for tightening an existing fence without cutting the wire, as these do. I use inline ratchets for new fence, but these for existing fence. It doesn't seem to weaken the wire as it tightens it, unlike some of the wire tighteners I've seen that twist the wire in a very small radius.
