A gun guys dream
So, I heard about it and heard about it, watched the youtube trailer repeatedly and often, and I finally got around to locating a film festival and going to see this bad boy (not an easy feat). I was literally blown away by shades of Mann, though comparison wise I think Kaufman goes easier on the dialogue making it a bit more gritty. This also isn't the first Kaufman entry I've witnessed, his film, 'The Prodigy' was on Netflix and one insomnia stricken night I felt the need for some low budget schlock. Well, low budget yes, schlock not so much. This is a guy who understands gunplay, as soldier I appreciate it when someone in Hollyweird gets it right. No one flying through the wall from a shotgun blast, no magical 9x19 parabellum that propels folks into outerspace like a rocketship from hell. Really, I don't want to gush too much about just the realistic treatment the weapons and tactics get in the film, yet it really stands out from your average Popcorn action nightmare. I won't spoil too much but the gunfight that occurs about midway through the film between Strong and Phillip's characters and the contractors is brutal, violent, and intentionally unstylized. The story is simple, the bad guys obviously bad. A PMC (private military company), two cops, soom footage that the contractors are desperate to keep under wraps, with characters far beyond the scope of your typical low dollar film. Johnny Strong was a real treat and I bought him and his portrayal of the character in question and I appreciated his taste in sidearms. Literally the character is a gunfighter set in the modern world when he belongs in the old west with a sixgun and a badge. Kim Coates dies too soon but chews up the little bit of screentime he gets, Costas Mandylor plays the villian with grim aplomb, Tom Berrenger is the seasoned father figure, Kevin Phillips portrays the likable young partner but he does it without suffering from some genre cliches that irk me. Matter of fact the usual "I hate you, you are mine enemy" young new partner assigned to work with a grizzled older partner crapola doesn't even happen and it's refreshing to see.Hopefully Kaufman keeps up the good work and makes some more films of this caliber. Johnny Strong? Well, I wouldn't yell if the duder was in a few more flicks, he hit all the right notes, pathos, aggression, a man literally born into the wrong era that just goes out and gets the job done. Can't wait to see the package from Amazon that I know will contain this film.

Sinners & Saints: Old School Cop Western
Sinners & Saints seems to have been a long time in the making. I remember seeing promo pics of Johnny Strong several years ago and watching the trailer a year or two after. It's a modern day old school gunfighter cop film in the vain of Street Kings and The Way of the Gun. It's full of familiar faces like Tom Berenger, Sean Patrick Flannery, Kim Coates, and Jurgen Prochnow, who are amongst a lot of other folks that you've seen a dozen times but just don't know their names. One of them being Johnny Strong who you'll recognize from The Fast and the Furious and Black Hawk Down as Delta Operator Randy Shughart. The later seems to have made an impression on Strong seeing that he's got a band called Operator, dude uses a Springfield TRP Operator in the flick, and he seems capable of pretty good gun and knife manipulation now. After watching the credits the dude seems to have had a big hand in this flick.Director William Kaufman did a bang up job on this one. He uses several folks from his previous flick, The Prodigy, and others who he uses in subsequent films. Kaufman seems to have an eye for action as The Prodigy had some great hand to hand scenes and this one follows with great knife and gunfights. He got his hands on great fight choreographers and contributors such as Sonny Puzikas, Magpul, Springfield Amory, and Raven Concealment. Folks in the know will recognize most of these before watching the credits. The big clue is all of the reloads. Still a lot of unending movie mags but Strong and Puzikas do several noticeable reloads in handgun and longgun. All in all if you enjoy flicks like Street Kings, The Way of the Gun, and Heat, you'll dig on this.

Gunfighting & Gun Play at its Best!!
Sinners & Saints is a sleeper of a movie, and already has a cult following in the gun world. This is one of best gunfighting movies in longtime, it will definitely find itself on the short list with movies like; The Way of the Gun , Heat , The Departed , Ronin , Training Day , and The Town . The movie is a revenge cop/cop with attitude movie with Detective Sean Riley being down-and-out on his luck and is catapulted into extraordinary situations, with nothing to lose. As already stated by another reviewer, but on the money, and I too hate to compare the two movies, but this is like the movie Lethal Weapon on steroids. This movie moves at a pretty good pace, telling a familiar story that has been told numerous times in this genre, but that does not detract from this movie that carries this storyline very well. The movie has quite few known supporting actors and cameos, to include the gun guru and Systema expert Sonny Puzikas. Not only was Sonny a "bad guy" in the movie, he also choreographed the gunfights and trained the actors in gun handling. This movie will be well worth your time and will certainly entertain you.
