Wondering if you ended up buying the larger size Sizzix? The dies need the be very small for this machine.

I already have the full size Big Shot. Just bought this for smaller dies and does not take up as much room on my work space.

What's the difference between the special edition and the other?

I don’t see any difference - except the price! I have the white/grey option and it came with the cutting plates, embossing plate and dies and embossing folders. I am very happy with it. I have a regular size big shot but so many of my dies are small and I can use this right at my crafting table.

I have a hard time shimming my original sidekick. Is this new one improved that detail or do you still find yourself adding additional shimming?

The updated version has thicker acrylic cutting plates to accommodate wafer thin dies. No adapter nor thick shimming is needed.

Yes, as long as it is small/narrow enough to fit thru the opening. Thinlits or framelits work fine. You could not fit a platform ( thick ) die....I do not think.
