Satish Chandra's History of Medieval India is a comprehensive overview of the history of the Indian subcontinent during the thousand-year period between the eighth and the eighteenth century. History of Medieval India studies this interesting period in Indian history when the land underwent drastic changes and was deeply influenced by the invading armies, religious movements, and the vicissitudes of the changing political, economic and cultural scene. To tell the history of a land spanning the geographical dimensions and the political divisions of the Indian subcontinent is in itself a formidable task. Satish Chandra executes this difficult mission withthe eye of an enquirer and the pen of a scholar.

The classic of mediaeval Indian history
Satish Chandra is a well-known authority on mediaeval Indian history, and this is a classic. The other one-star review is clearly politically motivated. Meenakshi Jain, whom the other review cites, has been widely criticized for her treatment of mediaeval Indian history as an overly simplistic, ideologically motivated Hindu victims vs. Muslim oppressors narrative, which ignores many historical sources.

One-sided history
This book has been described by Meenakshi Jain as part of Marxist historiography. The book is often one-sided and negationist and written with an agenda. The book omits "incovnient moments" and hides the history of persecution of Hindus, and the destruction of temples. At the same time, it projects these atrocities on Hindus (for which there is often no real case). It has also been criticized by Dr. Meenakshi Jain ("Flawed Narratives"), which includes many samples of confusion, obfuscation and distortion. Arun Shourie's excellent book on Marxist historians "Eminent Historians: Their Technology, Their Line, Their Fraud" also contains criticisms of this book.Instead of this book, I recommend to read the works of Sita Ram Goel, R.C. Majumdar, Sir Jadunath Sarkar, Koenraad Elst and Meenakshi Jain.

A worthy read for those interested in exploring Medieval India!
As an educator who teaches History, this book is a must for those who are intrigued by the Mughal sustenance in India. It explores their style of ruling, administrative reforms, social and cultural impact and the political tact used by several of its prominent rulers to consolidate their rule. The writing style is easy to follow and provides a good overview of each ruler. The last chapter especially is a good read for those wondering how it declined and why is it that the British were able to outwit them. Being a History enthusiast this is a good addition to my kindle library.
