If I could choose only one reason for buying this book it would be for the resources at the end of each chapter. Additionally, the chapters are concise and meaningful. This book meets the needs for anyone considering a career in special education.

This Book Really Works!
This volume is an invaluable resource for teachers of children with disabilities. However, it would also be helpful for any teacher who wishes to more effectively teach material that is sometimes difficult for the average child. There are specific sections on effectively teaching reading, math, and writing. There are sections that address all kinds of learners and children of various cultural backgrounds. This volume covers everything you need from how to use technology to more effectively teach the curriculum ,to how to improve students’ memory, as well as how to reinforce positive behavior. This text goes on to effective collaboration and co-teaching, how to monitor progress toward goals, and early childhood inclusionas well. What makes this book special is the way that it is organized. Each section includes a list of bulleted “dos” and “don’ts” that could prove very helpful to teachers. There are “Plugged In” boxes that give helpful websites that provide more information on that topic. Helpful graphic organizers are also included in each section. Little boxes called “Key Concepts”, summarize important paragraphs. “Making Connections” boxes list helpful references to other chapters in the text. There are reading lists for extended learning. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of “Additional Recommended Reading”, websites that offer support, and “Apps We Love” that pertain to each topic. As you can see, this is an extensive volume filled with helpful information. It is also very well organized and extremely “user friendly”. It is an invaluable reference book for teachers.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Learning and Understanding
An informative book that may be referenced or shared with others that would like to find understanding of the exceptional learners that is in classrooms and any environment of educating and learning. Editors Wendy W. Murawski and Kathy Lynn Scott include within four sections and 19 chapters a plethora of important information in a handbook format of techniques and that are content-centered of strengths and weaknesses that have been used by educators and administrators in the area of education. The book is designed for application, and one of many highlights include the various scenarios from do’s and don’ts to be used in and out of the classroom when interacting with exceptional learners. Each chapter ends with extremely helpful methods and worksheets as well as questions that open the door for further discussion. And fine points that are suggested in the process and explained to working with diverse learners, develop conceptual knowledge, learning with structure, demonstration, abstract depictions – pictorial, differentiating between short-term and long-term memory of information, emphasizing concepts through gestures, and incorporating and identifying information for quick review. These are a few topics and areas of discussion within the book as well as the exceptional resources that are listed at the end of each chapter. But most of all, it is the understanding that exceptional learners are unique and have the willingness to learn and one other important point that the authors make in the book that is necessary for learner and educator, a positive social culture.

Tons of pragmatic, useful tools here!
This is a brilliant handbook on dealing with the the exceptional learner. In my opinion it holds true for adults as well as children. Many current adults with autism spectrum disorders were not diagnosed in their school years. They are often part of a work force that is poorly trained to support their efforts. As a pediatric RN teaching children self care, I find this book a treasure trove of good ideas. We have less and less time now to educate patients on their health. This book teaches to maximize the time allotted and to not waste time on irrelevancies. Useful and practical; I'd say this should be required reading in nursing school and for HR professionals, as well as for teachers.

What Really Works series is exceptional
This book is set up to use as a guide and a text in dealing with particular challenges of the special needs teacher who has different issues in the classroom. I like how the chapters are divided into different topics and that each chapter ends with a list of references, more in depth resources for each topics. Just browsing through them, I found a number of books I keep on my most reachable shelves, including Play Therapy and Exceptional Students. The references also include many peer-reviewed journals, not just the big books. I like the mix of resources, the blend is more timely as well as more reliable.I especially found sections on teaching reading and decoding skills to be thoroughly responsive to different environments.

Layout is on busy side but info is good
I wavered on how to rate "What Really Works With Exceptional Learners". It has a lot of good information about a variety of situations and how to plan for and handle such situations. That said, the layout was a little busy. Okay, it was a lot busy, in my opinion, so as good as the information may have been, it was sometimes challenging to follow it. It is billed as a reference book though and in my mind, reference books aren't meant to read in a sitting or two. They are meant to be used as needed and with that in mind, I went with the 4-star rating rather than the middle-of-the-road 3-star.
