Works great - very convenient
Very nice 2-in-1 thermometer. It is easy to use and accurate! Its two functions are exactly what I need for my Blackstone griddle - The IR to measure the surface temperature of the griddle so I know when to begin, the probe to measure the internal temperature of whatever I'm cooking so I know when to stop. The unit is well built and easy to use and see (it has a nice backlight on the display). The unit also has a magnetic back - the magnet isn't super strong, but it is good enough to make sure the thermometer doesn't slip off the metal work surface on the side of my grill and fall on the ground. (I just wouldn't recommend using the magnet to hang the thermometer off the side of the grill - it tends to slip a bit when you do this.)

Essential griddle accessory
The IR works great for testing griddle temps, and the probe is perfect for checking the internal temps of meats while cooking. Easy to operate and read.

Awesome Grilling Accessory
This thing is awesome to dial in your grilling game. It is accurate, easy to read, and even better simple to use. The magnet is strong and sticks to the fridge or side of the grill/griddle. I love having this in my grilling toolkit.

Very good replacement for my busted Thermapen IR
I previously had a Thermapen IR by ThermoWorks (gonna call it "TIR" going forward) but I accidentally dropped it in a sink full of water which fried it immediately. I tried contacting support and they had me send it in, but ultimately they basically told me to pound sand and get a new one. I didn't want to drop another ~$175 so I figured I'd give the TP420 a try as there are very few options that have both a probe and IR (both of which I use constantly!) In many ways I like the TP420 better. It has a backlight (TIR doesn't), it can take a running average temperature (TIR can't), and the probe/infrared act totally independently. With the TIR it's one or the other, and it was often finicky because it wouldn't register the probe being closed so I'd have to squeeze it tightly to use the IR function. Also, the TIR costs ~$175 while the TP420 costs less than 1/4 that (as I type this). The built-in magnet on the TP420 is also a nice touch. Really, the only few things I like better about the TIR is that it looks sleeker and it turns on when you deploy the probe, with the TP420 you have to press an "on" button, which is nit-picky, but I do like the immediacy of the TIR. The TIR's probe is a bit faster, however, ThermoWorks prides themselves on how fast their thermometers are and the TP420 is no slouch. The TIR realistically takes 2-3 seconds and the TP420 is more like 4-5. It's just enough to be noticeable, but not enough to make much difference unless you regularly have to do many temp checks in quick succession. Accuracy is quite good! I have a latest-gen Thermapen One (non-IR version) which comes with a calibration certificate, and it along with my Anova Pro sous vide circulator agree with each other right down to the decimal, so I'm fairly confident they are quite accurate. My TP420 tends to read about 0.7 to1.2 degrees (F) warmer, which isn't enough to worry about for most applications. I definitely recommend this over the Thermapen IR I had before. Little accidents are very common in the kitchen and I'd much rather be out ~$40 than $175!

Very handy thermometer for griddle and grill cooking
I was out cooking on my Trager Flatrock griddle a few weeks ago and was wishing there was a combination probe / IR contactless thermometer. I decided to check Amazon to see if something existed and found this. I'm happy to report that it works perfectly and I'm very happy with the purchase. When griddle cooking, it's nice to know the surface temperature for certain things, like when cooking eggs, searing a steak, or toasting. I'd say I'm a seasoned griddler at this point, but the Flatrock does run a bit warm on low, so having this all-in-one thermometer can come in very handy. I've used it several times thus far, and I've found it to be very useful. The display is easy to read, the IR measurement can easily be switched between MIN/MAX/AVG which is great, the LCD is backlit, and it allows easy switching between C/F measurements. If I had any feedback to make it better, it would be a bit faster probe temperature reading and having a laser dot for the IR thermometer. I'd consider both knit picking at this point though. If you grill or griddle, and want an all-in-one thermometer, this is a great choice!

A must have tool for anyone with an outdoor griddle…
Trying to understand why you keep burning your eggs on the griddle? Don’t know why your pancakes are black charr on the outside and liquid batter on the inside? It’s because you aren’t managing the temperature on your griddle correctly. This little tool will help you do just that. If you wanna sear a steak or get that perfect crisp on your smash burger - you need to know at what temperatures you are operating your griddle. This handheld tool will let you do this without touching the heat. All the user has to do is aim it at the surface and get an instant reading on the screen. This device has a backlit screen, easy to use interface (switches between F and C degrees easily), and has a convenient auto shutoff at 90 seconds. The attached meat probe is yet another added benefit. Overall this device is hefty, and will last if taken care of. The package coming with batteries for immediate operation is a plus. If you need one of these for your griddle times - look no further, this is the one.

Works great so far. It’s handy to measure both cooking surface temperature and internal temperature on one unit.

I use this product while cooking on my stovetop griddle. Having the infrared thermometer to check the surface temperature, and the external thermometer to check the meat temperature makes this product versatile.
