Satsuma Mandarin Tree Starter Plant. Citrus unshiu. 3'' - 5''

Really happy with how this plantling arrived. It is green and sturdy and healthy. I am happy with the quality and it arrived well fed. It’s not huge, but I am looking forward to having it grow even more. No buds on it yet, but the leaves are green. Cost is average for what you’d pay elsewhere. Overall, a great starting plant. I look forward to watching it grow and hope for the best in a healthy bloom!

I was a little skeptical about how the plant would look when it arrived. But it was packaged with great care and was completely unscathed by the journey. Just a few minutes after partially unwrapping the mylar bubble wrap and putting it on the windowsill the leaves began to spread, and the plant looked happy and healthy. I'm thankful for the care instructions that came in the box. I might have just winged it and messed up. I bought this for my son who has been trying to grow oranges from seeds without success. This will give him an excellent head start.

When purchasing fruit trees, it is advisable to choose grafted plants. While there are various types of satsuma trees, only a few are considered edible. Growing a fruit tree from seed will not result in an exact replica of the parent plant; instead, a hybrid plant is typically produced. If the tree is not self-pollinating and is exposed to pollinators, the resulting seeds will be a combination of the original species and other closely related fruit species, such as lemons, limes, or other citrus varieties that bloom simultaneously. All the seeds produced will be a mixture of these two plants, which presents a challenge. There is no guarantee that a true satsuma tree will grow from seed, as it will contain genetic material from both the satsuma tree and the other species (unless it was self-pollinated). Even in the case of self-pollination, there will still be variations in the seeds, making them not exact replicas. When growing fruit trees from seeds, it is uncertain whether the resulting fruit will be edible, as it may be extremely bitter or sour. This process takes many years, and there is even a possibility that the tree may never bear fruit in its lifetime. On the other hand, grafting fruit trees allows for the cloning of the mother plant, ensuring that the fruit size, quality, and taste are known since it is a 100% genetic copy. The vast majority of fruit trees sold from nurseries are sold as grafts. These grafts consist of a part of the mother plant attached to a different plant's root system, typically dwarf trees to limit their size. This guarantees the acquisition of a good tree. There are a few common types of satsumas, such as Kishu and Owari. Each Kishu satsuma is an exact genetic clone of the same mother plant, and the same applies to Owari satsumas. Please be aware that there is a considerable amount of risk associated with this purchase. There is no guarantee that the fruit produced by these plants will be edible, or that any fruit will be produced at all. It is possible that you could spend several years, even a decade or more, only to find that the fruit, if any, is extremely unpleasant and not suitable for consumption. It is important to fully understand and acknowledge the risks involved in this purchase, as the time invested in nurturing these plants cannot be recovered in the future. Regarding the plants themselves, they arrived in excellent condition despite their small size. However, I did notice some gnats in the soil of both plants. I sincerely hope that they do not suffer from any citrus diseases, as citrus trees are susceptible to numerous diseases, many of which are fatal. It is worth noting that nurseries that sell grafted plants typically conduct thorough checks for these diseases before bringing any to market for sale. ----- 1 year update Had these two trees for a year, they have never done well, grew little and simply struggle to survive. Looking at them now it's very clear both are infected with Citrus Greening Disease. This disease is dormant for about a year before you can see symptoms of the disease. The disease is fatal, 100% fatality rate, and has no cure what so ever. Its a major disease for citrus trees, and wipes out millions of trees yearly globally. The disease is caused by a bacteria infection, once infected bugs which feed on the tree carry it on to other unaffected trees. Once the disease is spotted the only option is to remove the diseased trees to help prevent further spread. Given symptoms of the disease take a year to show themselves I feel pretty confident these two "trees" where infected prior to receiving them, as well as many others sold by this seller. Since the disease takes 1-1.5 years to show itself they likly had no clue they where shipping diseases trees with a 100% fatality rate. Given this I simply can't recommend these to anyone under any circumstance.

It started at the size of the photo from Amazon . ☘️ 🍊 I planted some other mandarin seeds beside it and got another plant . Hopefully we get some oranges . I understand it will prob be years for that to happen if it does . Also , time to move it to a bigger planter soon . I think a 14 in planter will do it good for a long while and some plant fruit fertilizer..

I ordered one of each key lime, Meyer lemon, valencia orange, and satsuma mandarin from this vender. I received one key lime and two each of the rest. It's true about what everyone says about the packaging. It's amazing that they put so much effort into delivering plants in the best condition that they can. Speaking of condition of the plants, I have been ordering live plants for a few years now and have never NEVER EVER received plants in such good shape. If one dies it will be all on me or an act of god. Gerald & Son is a shining example of what you want from an Amazon vender (fast shipping, good price, and quality product.} Keep up the great work and you have a customer for life.

I was very impressed in how much care there was in protecting each Orange tree during shipment. I ordered two Satsuma Mandarin Orange Trees and one Clementine Orange tree. I hope to be able to harvest fresh Oranges here in Tacoma Washington USA in the Pacific Northwest in a fairly big hybrid grow light and greenhouse on the South Side of my house. I had great success with a Meyer Lemon tree growing around a hundred ripe lemons every year in a smaller 6 foot by 6 foot by 7 foot tall greenhouse behind my laundry room. These small Orange trees arrived very healthy in small containers and they were very professionally shipped for their protection. The Bubble Mylar outer wrap was taped and sealed containing each tree and was taped so none of them would move inside the cardboard box . After removing each tree in their containers from the Outer wrap ,the had taped transparent plastic which prevented the trees and soil from coming out. after removing the transparent plastic was moist tissue which covers the soil and this has also to be removed. I have never seen such care for mail order trees and this company has great professionalism and care with their products. The shipping was far quicker than I thought. I received my Orange trees a full week before expected.

The seeds look like they came out of someone ‘s Mandarin. Very small and dried up.
