Very effective at carving wood.
I do a lot of wood carving - large mushrooms and the like cut from logs. I've mainly used saucer shaped grit-faced metal discs. I had doubts about using flap wheels - I didn't think they would be up to the job and would wear away too easily - but they don't - they work really well. I previously thought of them as only being useful for stripping paint or rust, but they take off a bigger depth of wood than I thought they would. I'm a convert! I shall be using more of these in future.
