Should is poison and I'm sad to see it repeated so much by a respected mental health professional.
I'm having my first go at this book, along with trying to read the Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress Free Living. So far I am not having much luck. I am probably too sensitive, or there's something wrong with me (obviously) but I am stumbling every time I see the word "should" in this book. You should do this, you should not do that, you should be thinking this way, you should not be thinking that way. For me, 'should' is a very judgemental and shaming word; I have read some books in the Albert Ellis REBT mode of therapy and one of the little catchphrases REBT uses is "Stop should-ing on yourself," I have had some therapy (not enough, obviously) and one of my therapists advised me to purge this word from my vocabulary. So seeing it dozens of times in the first 20-odd pages of this book is really making it hard for me to get to the lesson. I am going to keep trying but at first pass, I just can't get past the 'should's'. I'm going to read the Mayo Clinic Guide some more, and watch the videos Dr. Sood recommends and see if I can come back to this book with a better attitude and be less reactive to the word 'should'

Not what I expected
Definitely not what I was expecting based on the reviews, based on which I ordered 2 copies- one for me and one for my parents- but after starting to read it I am not so sure how useful this would be for my parents. I will explain more in a later edit of this review about why the low rating but for now am leaving this rating as a caution to those like me who might be reading the five star reviews and be intrigued by the title of the book and have the impulse to buy multiple copies of the book like I did, as gifts or whatever. Best to check it out at a bookstore or library before buying, I think.
