I wanted to treat my wooden garden furniture to a coat of something nice to protect it from the elements and make it look shiny and new. I'm not talking about particularly fancy solid teak from the hills of Myanmar or mahogany from the rainforests of Madagascar, just a couple of nice deck chairs that I like to sit on occasionally between the rain showers and the feeling of guilt for not mowing the lawn and trimming the herbaceous borders. Wood, of course, comes from trees and I am painfully aware that a tree will have died, or at least suffered a major amputation to allow my deck chair to exist and it is, therefore, important to take care of the wood to ensure that it does not dry up or crack in the sun (bright object that is sometimes seen in the sky briefly in the month of July) or, more likely, suffer from the affects of acid rain that burns through the varnish and rots the timber. Having looked for some protective lubricant I was initially baffled by the range of products on offer. It seems you can select anything from a basic teak oil such as this to a high end branded product with celebrity endorsements and expensive packaging for approximately three times the price per litre. I figured that this is actually a pretty standard product and there was no need to splash out on the expensive stuff, it is, after all, just a solvent that has been designed to replace the natural oils in timber to make it last a bit longer. This product arrived three days after placing the order which is not bad. Let's face it, no one orders teak oil for an emergency and I cannot think of an example when anyone would actually want same day delivery. It is made by Bartoline which is a family company based in Beverly in Yorkshire. I have been to Beverly and it is a nice market town with friendly people and, according to the marketing literature, an exquisite 13th century minster. I was more interested in the pasty shops and pub to be honest but the churchy thing looked nice from the outside. The bottle is plastic and, as you would expect, has one of those child proof tops that you have to push down to open (if all else fails you can ask a child to open it for you). The oil feels like a lubricant but does not particularly smell of anything. I applied it with a rag rather than a brush and it went on easily enough. The seeped nicely into the dry wood and vanished in a few minutes. I would not want to actually sit on it for at least 24 hours and I would suggest this would be good advice for any other user too. The Bartoline website has a handy section with both a Safety Data Sheet and a Technical Data Sheet for the product. Apparently it has been tested on both rats and rabbits with no harmful effects. I would not want to be either the rat or the rabbit that it was tested on though. All in all this is a solid choice and it works too. Five stars.
