The Art of Sound: A Visual History for Audiophiles

A great book chock full of excellent color photos of things you've never seen pictures of before. As the photos all come from the EMI archive, the book is very UK-centric but since it's calling itself a "visual history for audiophiles" rather than "the definitive history of sound" that didn't bother me. More of a lovely coffee table book than an encyclopedia or reference text. But good info in here too.

I am a professor of Sound Engineering. This book is a wonderful pictorial history of audio technology. I recommend it to my students who would like more on the history of the developing technology.

Wonderful compendium, almost like an encyclopedia of sound technology. Beautiful and rare images provide a richly illustrated book.

Great book.

Nice design, some good pictures, but, as others have noted, it its very Eurocentric. Not a problem if you know what you are getting.

Too many pictures and not enough text. Was expecting more detail. Font is WAY too small and difficult to read due to page color contrast.

Terrific book detailing the history of sound recording and playback technologies. Deducting a star only because of the Euro-centric viewpoint, and the sometimes odd organization of content (mainly the bios of people from various eras appearing willy-nilly in the book). The info in the book is top notch though, with lots of gorgeous pics of old audio recording gear, old record magazine covers, even a few blueprints of patents for various audio devices.

If you are stirred by the words and pictures that tell the story of analogue recorded sound from the cylinder onwards through to digital streaming this really is the book for you.
