Hand Lettering for Relaxation: An Inspirational Workbook for Creating Beautiful Lettered Art

I just started this book yesterday, and I’m finding it hard to stop myself!! This is so much fun to practice and see come to life. Each chapter is very short, building on the lessons before it. She gives you a phrase to work on, with little extras as it goes (laurels and ampersands so far), and each step is broken down into excellent easy to follow examples. Literally, you are never left wondering how she did something or what you need to do to create the same effect. You can finish each chapter in an hour or less, including practicing, designing and coloring the fantastic borders/page designs the author puts in to fit that chapter design. It would be nicer if the book was spiral bound, but it’s not necessary since all of the “do it yourself” pages seem to be on the right side of the page. I’d love to try more from this author after I finish this book. I highly recommend for anyone who is remotely interested in this type of artistic writing! *Note: I am using a heavyweight acid free paint/marker pad (from a local box store) with Aenart Dual Brush Pens (from Amazon) and I’d recommend both if you are considering buying this for yourself or to gift someone.

I absolutely love this book! I have it sitting on my desk and am able to practice during down time. It brings me a lot of joy and I am surprised how easy it is to create the doodles and calligraphy.

This is a perfect book for a beginner in lettering and simple art. The book's preview of "Look Inside" gives an accurate feel for the entire book. The book is printed on thick stock and it is well bound, meaning it will hold together but you can also completely open the book without having to use a paperweight. I am new to lettering and it gives exactly what I need. It explains how to mix different types of fonts, how to blend colors together for font, how to place various words (such as curving some words while leaving other words straight), how to write in numerous font styles, how to create watercolor backgrounds, how to make monograms, how to overlap text, how to digitize your work and how to do some basic drawing. Again, if you are an established artist or calligrapher, this book is too basic for you. For a beginner, it is a wonderful, fun, non-intimidating introduction book. Personally, I like the pages best that weren't part of the preview. However, as I mentioned, the entire book is at the skill-level you can preview. So, if you like the preview, I think you'll like the book. If you're not "wowed" by the preview, you probably won't like the book.

Been using this book for a while and is really helpful. I bought it to supplement my hand lettering and doodling learning. Amy does a great job with relating life lessons and inspirational quotes with each lesson. I recommend this book to any lettering beginner. However, I wouldn't solely rely on this book for learning script letter. I would still look for books or printable worksheet online to practice on. Tip: To help keep this book in good condition I don't write in the book at all. I either use a separate sketchbook or create a copy of certain pages to write and practice on.

This is a pretty spiffy book. Please keep in mind, this is a LETTERING book, not a professional calligraphy tutorial. I personally have 0 experience with either, and I wasn’t looking to become a professional calligrapher. I wasn’t disappointed with this book. It is absolutely gorgeous. Each chapter/workshop (usually 4pgs long) has a brief description of objective, a short tutorial, a small 1/2pg for practice, than a beautifully decorated final page where you can write/design the practice phrase on a larger scale. Each chapter (thus far in on ch 5), there is a phrase that you’ll use to practice the topic of the workshop. There are a few workshops which provide a full alphabet, but more are focused on learning the general concept rather than each individual letter. I believe the point of this is that the author continually encourages personal creativity and design. The idea is to enjoy letter design rather than perfecting it. It’s not just about letters either. There are banners, floral patterns, blending techniques, shadowing, background ideas etc etc. I’ve included the table of contents and a few pics of pages so you have an idea of the variety offered by this book. Again, I emphasize that if you’re looking solely for traditional, professional calligraphy, this probably isn’t the book for you. BUT if you’re into making signs, bullet journals, or just creative writing techniques, you should seriously check this book out. It’ll give you a TON of ideas.

I am an Enchanted Realms Intuitive Artist and I was looking for something to add to add to the Dragons, Fairies, Unicorn and all things Enchanted Realms art that I do to give it more character. I happened to come across this book as I was searching for different forms of art media. I have to say that I am a firm believer that nothing happens by accident and all things of wonder is truly magic. With that being said since this book as come cross my path the creativity has opened up a whole another level of ideas. This book is beautifully written and easily explained and the lessons are extremely easy to do. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to add to their daily self love and self care. This would be a great book for those who have been suggested to write a journal but have a hard time to do so. This book would be great for anyone who is looking for a way to give themselves some Me Time.

I absolutely love Amy's book! Like so many others that follow her online or at One Artsy Mama, I couldn't wait for the release date. As opposed to other handlettering books I own this one, with a over 200 pages, is packed full of great little "tutorials". The book itself is sturdy with thick quality cardstock paper & can lay flat no matter what page your working on. One can tell by the detailing on each page how much time & thought went into putting this workbook together. It's too beautiful to write in! Lol Although, I would have like to seen her cover bounce lettering I can't take away any stars. This was so well put together & the price vs. the amount of info & quality is unbelievable. Most authors charge twice what Amy has, for a poorer quality book with much less material. Overall, this is by far the prettiest & most informational handlettering book I own or have personally seen. It deserves much more than 5 stars!! Amy, you really knocked it out of the park with this one!! It's an amazing workbook & a fabulous looking coffee table book! ❤

I am really enjoying working through the book with the simple inspirations and instructions, but the spine arrived damaged.

This is probably the best book to own if you are starting off with creative writing, lettering or calligraphy! Very nicely step by step instructions are given which are simple to follow. Lots of empty space inside to practice each workshop. Contains mpre than 40 workshop to learn everything from letters in different styles, borders and doodles too! This book is everything you need! I totally love it and reccomend it..

Love it

So enjoying using this book. Divided into over 40 Workshops (I have completed 8). it is a heavy tome and covers a great deal. Quality of the paper is very good so perfect for my own attempts at lettering. Love the inspiring quotes which I practise on premium printing paper then fill in the spaces provided in the book. It is illustrated throughout with drawings and doodles which are relaxing and fun to colour in and makes for an attractive book and record of your lettering journey. Amy Latta has put a lot of thought into this beautiful book. Thank you so much!

A new hobby

I have a very artistic daughter and she loves this book. She received it as a gift when she was 9 and she and I both loved using it to teach ourselves how to make decorative lettering and doodles. She has loved it for adding flair to lettering on her school projects and making cards for people. She is now 11 and still uses this book so we bought it for her friend’s birthday. This book is great for adults AND kids. (I am NOT artistic but I have had great success in learning to do beautiful letters and doodles with this book!). She and I both equally enjoy it!
