Tried 9 brands - One of the best blackout masks but can slide a bit during sleep
Correction on Albatross and FengXinZi 3D, and updating review after rotating a few masks on a 2 week trip:Have owned the Mzoo mask for a while but wanted to get more/backups. I saw another review that looked at several different sleep masks and found it pretty helpful but wanted to expand into a few other brands not on their list, see if there were other gems. I’ve listed my favorites below from highest rated to lowest and put in the price range (sale/full) and my overall rating out of 10. For reference, my nose bridge is not very tall and my face isn’t super wide, so the fit on my face may yield different results than someone with a very different facial profile. I also usually sleep on my back. After trying these, I would keep the, SmartRest, ZGGCD, Albatross and FengXinZi 3D. Time will tell how well these hold up to usage and washing. If I find one of these falling apart or losing shape completely after hand washing, I’ll update the review.Albatross - $8/10 - 9.5/10 My partner’s favorite mask, with deep eye sockets which are great for those with long lashes. Nose area is very soft, and the whole mask feels lightweight and doesn’t seem to apply much pressure on the face. This mask similar to Gritin for the ridges and how deep and wide the eye sockets are, but material is closer to FengXinZi (foam). 98% blackout which is really good. The eye socket area looks wider than FengXinZi so maybe that’s good if you have a wider face too. My partner also says this doesn’t slide around as much during the night like the Albatross mask does—he says he forgets he has it on and when he wiggles his cheeks it doesn’t slide. A really good mask for its price and also comes with a carrying bag and soft ear plugs. I wish the padding was a little silkier and flatter on the face but it’s amazing for blackout and not very expensive either.SmartRest - 2 for $13 - 9.5/10 This one is probably the best quality for the value of being just $6.50 a mask. A really great dupe for Mzoo and still cheaper than ZGGCD! 97% blackout, material feels like Mzoo on the inside. Like Mzoo, it’s not as deep on the eye sockets as masks like the 3D/ so long lashes may find this uncomfortable, but overall the ridges are flatter so this may be more comfortable for side sleepers and those who don’t want to feel the ridges as much. And the silky material feels more cooling on my skin than the foam material ones. Very underrated for its value!FengXinZi 3D - $10/14 9/10 This might be the best blackout one I’ve tried (100%) for my face shape and nose bridge. Wraps very closely around the face and eyes and is soft around the nose, but while it’s very soft, it’s more foam-like than the silky material of Mzoo/ZGGCD. The ridges on the inside are also pronounced (on the taller side) but there’s no hard border like on the Gritin so it’s more bearable for side sleepers. Also has very deep eye sockets, deeper than Gritin, so better for those with very long lashes that would brush against a mask like Mzoo/ZGGCD. Eye sockets aren’t as wide out though so they wrap around my face well but for wider faces, maybe the blackout effect will be different. Scored a little lower because my partner said it slides up his face a bit during sleep so that it seems to almost dig into the groove below his eyes, which disrupts his sleep.ZGGCD - $10/16/20 9/10 The closest dupe for the Mzoo mask. It felt just slightly plusher or softer than the Yiview one. On sale, they’re around $10 which is very affordable for being comfortable and 98% blackout. At full price, it’s still about half the price of Mzoo at full price. Like Mzoo, the ridges are flatter so would be more comfortable for side sleepers, but for super long lashes you may get some eyelash brushing. SmartRest is a better value though than this and performs very similarly!Yiview - $13/15 8/10 Looks identical to ZGGCD but felt slightly less plush when I first wore it. It does recommend washing first though, and maybe that’s why it felt marginally more firm. Depending on the sale, this is very comparable to ZGGCD so you could go with whichever happens to be cheaper at the time. Similar 97% blackout. Preferred ZGGCD so will be returning.Gritin - $10 - 7.5/10 Pretty good quality for just $10 but has pronounced ridges especially on the lower half which may bother some users like myself. As for the pros, it has deeper eye sockets than Mzoo/ZGGCD so if you have long lashes or extensions, this might help you experience less eyelash brushing. Eye socket area is wider than FengXinZi so maybe better for wider faces too. Has a nice textured look and feel on the outside. Wraps around the face like the FengXinZi 3D but the texture on the inside is more similar to Mzoo/ZGGCD, except around the forehead and cheeks where the ridges are more pronounced than masks like Mzoo/ZGGCD. My main issue with this is that I feel enough pressure from the ridges on my cheeks that it isn’t fully comfortable. About 98% blackout, which is really good. The side ridges aren’t as tall as FengXinZi but it does have a harder border around the edges so for side sleepers this also might be less comfortable.LKY Digital - 3 for $10 - 7.5/10 Higher points for being very economical and also 95% blackout on my face shape, but it’s not as full coverage and not as plush on the face, almost makes me feel like it would leave indents on the skin if you made it tighter. If you’re planning to give away as freebies or willing to just use and toss after a trip, this would be a great economical option. Will be returning as I have no need for these when the other masks are generally better quality and I want them for keeps.Mzoo - $20/30 - 7/10 The first mask I ever tried a few years ago, worked fine but is not cheap, which is the main gripe. I use lots of face product, so I’d need several to rotate out and air dry after washing. This just isn’t very affordable so that’s most of the point loss, especially if you need multiple. But it’s comfortable, not very tight, ridges aren’t too tall, and 97% blackout for me with light coming through around the nose. Over time (more than a couple years) it does start falling apart.FlyCoco - $12/13 - 6.5/10 It looks just like the FengXinZi 3D down to the box, so I assumed it was the same mask under a different seller. But while I really liked the FengXinZi mask for its 100% blackout on my face shape, this was more like a 95% blackout. Also has more negative reviews about smell (I didn’t notice a bad smell) so I’d go with the more reviewed FengXinZi. Preferred FengXinZi so will be returning.

Truly Blocks the Light Without Pressing on My Eyes
I’ve tried quite a few sleep masks over the years, but this one really stands out. The contoured design makes a huge difference—nothing is pressing directly on my eyes, and I can blink freely without that smushed feeling. It actually blocks out the light, which has been a game-changer for my midday naps and early summer mornings when the sun rises way too early. The strap is fully adjustable and doesn’t tug at my hair or slip off during the night. I was skeptical about the shape at first, but it fits the curves of my face really well and doesn’t let light leak in from the sides or nose area. The material is soft and breathable, so I don’t wake up sweaty or with lines on my face.Overall, it’s comfortable, effective, and well-made. If you’re a light sleeper or need total darkness to fall asleep, this is definitely worth trying.

good quality - not my preference though
these could be beneficial if you don’t want the mask pressing against your eyes. unfortunately for me these felt like goggles and I felt pressure on the areas around my eyes no matter how loose I adjusted it. I also realized I prefer masks that touch my eyelids bc keeping them pressed down helps me fall asleep. great quality though.

Comfortable, complete black out
Bought the black, originally for plane flight. Complete black out, very comfortable. Used multiple times on trip to block out light from hotel rooms. Does not press against eyes or eyelashes or leave marks on face. Will never travel without it again.

5 star for back sleeper, 4 star for side, digs into cheek
Bought several sleep masks to compare. I'm a side sleeper and sometimes it's more belly than side, so I plant my cheek into the pillow. In all cases, black is your friend; pink masks may look nice, but will always allow a little light through. I was not paid for this research. My remarks are either positive (+) or negative (-) below:LKY DIGITAL“Sleep Mask for Side Sleeper 3 Pack, Blackout 3D”+ Blocked: 99% light blocking+ With eyes shut, I found this sufficient light blocking+ Super comfy on side, because it doesn't have the big foam ridge+ If you sleep on your side, like any mask it will leave a slight mark on your face, but this was very faint- But obviously if you have long lashes, it may not work for you- Only a slight smell of plastic, but washed anyway+ Have bought before: it's my spouse's favorite mask+ Kept5 stars for side-sleeper. Recommend!LitBear“Sleep Mask for Side Sleeper”Blocked: 100% light blocking+ Deep sockets, eye lashes don't touch when you open your eyes in the mask- Not super comfy on side of face, the foam digs in a little- Smells of plastic- Kept5 stars for side-sleeper or back-sleeper. Recommend!Albatross“Sleep Eye Mask for Men Women, Lash Extensions 3D Sleeping Mask”+ Blocked: 100% light blocking!! Amazing!+ Deep sockets, eye lashes don't touch when you open your eyes in the mask- Not super comfy on side of face, the foam digs in a lot- Smells of plastic, washed to try to remove the off-gassing smell+ Kept it anyway. Hoping the foam on the side will flatten over time.4 stars for side-sleeper or 5 stars for back-sleeper3D“3D Deep Contoured Eye Covers for Sleeping”+ Blocked: 99% light blocking+ Deep sockets, eye lashes don't touch when you open your eyes in the mask- Not super comfy on side of face, the foam digs in a little- Smells of plastic- Returned4 stars for side-sleeper or 5 stars for back-sleeperSmartRest“Sleep Mask [2 Pack] - Eye Mask for Sleeping - Patented, Contoured, 100% Blackout”Blocked: 98% light blocking+ Deep sockets, eye lashes don't touch when you open your eyes in the mask- Not super comfy on side of face, the foam digs in a little- Smells of plastic- Returned4 stars for side-sleeper or 5 stars for back-sleeperMavogel“Modal Material Eye Mask for Sleeping, Ultra Soft and Skin Friendly Full Eye Covers”Blocked: 94% light blocking- Basically ineffectual, poor fit- If the half-inch band on most sleep masks leaves an imprint on your hair, this may be better, as it's 3” wide- Let's light through- I was hoping it would block some sound, since it covers the ears. Nope.- Spouse said it looked like someone just tied a rag round my head for a game of Blind Man's Buff- Presses on eyelashes- Returned1 star, Not Recommended.
