Measuring Behaviour
K**M
written for psychology
I have used the 3rd edition by Paul Martin & Patrick Bateson for the lab portion of my undergraduate Animal Behavior course for years, and it is extremely good; it is concise, easy to read and very helpful for teaching students how to do the basics of Animal Behavior research. I ordered this new edition by Melissa Bateson and Paul Martin based on the table of contents thinking it was a revised/updated edition, and it was a mistake. It is designed for psychological research (primarily on humans) not Behavioral Ecology. While there is some of the same content, it has had several things taken out that were important for Animal Behavior, and has too much information in it that does not apply to the study of animals. Because it tried to encompass both animal and human research, it is a longer text and not as concisely and clearly written. Despite the fact that they are both behavioral in focus, the fields of psychology and animal behavior research are different enough that they really would be better off as separate texts. Despite the fact the 3rd edition is getting dated, I will go back to using that.
