It's staged more like a huge 'set' in a play than a movie
One of the most artistically magnificent sets I've ever seen; this whole film is the exceptional creation of master Sanjay Leela Bhansali of India and while some didn't receive it so well there, I heard, I found it a masterpiece that just had me wow'd from beginning to end. It's light, it's deep, it's passionate, it's just young friendship. It's staged more like a huge 'set' in a play than a movie; a dream world even. The culture is muslim, the art of it and there's one ceremonial dance on full moon Eid, but the film is made in total neutrality, in other words, there is no religious or political reference in the movie. It's a love story and a hoping for love story and a story of young friends. Some of the scenes are breath-takingly beautiful.I guess you'll either love it like I did or you won't...Rani Mukerjee is her wonderful self in this; great actress; she plays a red light district girl but as I said, it's all more dreamlike than real; she befriends the young wandering musician. Ranbir Kapoor is very young in this, one of his first movies I would imagine? He's just darling in it and kind of flops about in joyous innocence. Sonam Kapoor is very young here, it also must be one of her first movies; she is just breath-takingly beautiful. The prolific Salman Khan is very quiet, very deep and grounded, hence sultry, magnetic, in low key, steamy role this time and thus a rare performance from him.

MY FAVOURITE INDIAN FILM!
Few Indian would agree with me. This film was an absolute failure there in its country. A friend from Mumbai asked me what it was that I loved so much about the film and I said "The music and the color". He laughed out loud at me and replied "The color? What color? There's no color in this film! It's all blue!!!" And yes, he was right, the film is definitely blue, blue in both meanings of the adjective: the color and the mood. But, I take every opportunity I have to show this film to my friends here in Spain. I have had lots of them to watch it since I bought it, and they have all loved it. All of them! So, I guess they unintentionally made an Indian film for western people, even though that wasn't obviously their intention. Actually, this was a very expensive film and it was meant to please larges audiences in India and be a blockbuster! In the end only the music achieved that success. Yes, the music is superb! On that, every Indian person would agree with me. Anyway, I think everyone who loved "Moulin Rouge", or Coppola's "One from the Heart" would like this film. Here, as in those films, the powerful score dominates the movie and Saawariya was completely shot on studio stages too, with no location shots. The truth is that the stages here as amazing, so visually stunning! A superb extravaganza, the same as in the two films mentioned before. I think they have many things in common but for the color of course. But I love blue, anyway.

OUTSTANDING Music!!
I initially found out about this sound track from a movie trailer. I purchased the movie and was so impressed with the music I had to find the sound track as well. While the movie was a bit difficult to follow due to having to read subtitles, the music will grab you and take you away! It's a combination of traditional Indian music but with a twist in that modern instruments are used extensively. A better understanding of what went into the music production can be had in the Special Features section on the DVD for those that are interested. It's easy to find online. The choreography in the film is also a joy to watch. It's quite rhythmic and precise while being quite a bit more involved than many dancing attempts done with other music.I would highly recommend this sound track to anyone that likes Indian Music but even more so if the DVD is watched first! I couldn't get it out of my mind for several weeks... but in a good way!!!

Wonderful and what a film should and can be.
Every so often. In a blue moon, one finds a magical, entrancing work that grabs you from the start. Each character is sympathetic. Each is magical for the staging and talent.I (we) LOVED this examply of Bollyhoo's ballyhoo. If it was possible for a second helping, i would hold out my bowl for "More Please!".And Galubji,...ah Galubji. An old dog, I feel as young as a Pup. So beautiful, so wry, so sexy. The production was lush and vibrant. The music appropriate and rich. The dances fun and not over the top; placed where they should have been placed. And the direction,.....with a feather, tickeling and not with a sledge hammer as so many films are badly beaten.Enough! Basta! Effes!Watch it. Watch it again after some time has passed. Enjoy it more.

Poetic, poignant, beautiful
Some of the music in this piece is so indescribably beautiful I have to watch the movie over and over again ... and I can't bear to skip to the musical parts because the story in between is so compelling. Amazing acting, artful dance, unbeatable voices, and a timeless love story that makes your heart bleed and rejoice at the end at the same time. If you haven't discovered Bollywood yet, this is an excellent place to start.

Magical Love
The whole setting in this movie is magical. This is a musical movie. The music and lyrics are original and beautiful. You can't help but cry with Raj. This movie reminds you that love can be very painful but also makes you believe that there is such a thing as "soul mates ".
