I believe it is an acid-based drain opener. I would not waste my money on any other product. GLUG gets the clog to disappear and soon your drain will flow freely again. Of course, you can always marry a plumber.......

Can you use in bath tub drain? How do you ensure chemical cleared before using tub?

I never used it in my tub, just the sink. The directions states that it can be used on clogged tub drains. Keep rinsing the drain with warm (not hot) water until drain is not clogged anymore.
