A long haul travel must-have
My husband and I just came back from our "trip of a lifetime," NYC to Auckland, NZ, a 17 hour flight (15 hour return)! I was really worried about how the trip would affect our first few days in New Zealand, especially since my husband has always been uncomfortable in economy class and has never been able to sleep on a plane. I looked into an upgrade to business class, but it was thousands of dollars. I couldn't do that, but I could get the best travel pillow on the market, the Travelrest Nest. The pillow design is a game-changer. The angled back of the pillow fits against the seat on the plane so it places you comfortably. The pillow and the seat are not fighting each other. Then, the extra tall sides of the pillow actually work to stabilize your neck, preventing any wobbles or the dreaded "crick" in the neck. It was super comfortable for sleeping. I also loved that the pillow comes with a bag that helps you compress the pillow when not in use. It's easy to stuff the pillow in and then you can fold it again to reduce the size quickly and easily. Again, when you're stuck in economy class, this sort of innovation is a game-changer, as ever square inch is precious! My only complaint is really with the airline, not the pillow. The cabin was overly warm and so the soft fleece fabric of the pillow added to the feeling of being overheated and stuffy. Everyone in the cabin was hot, so I don't think the pillow was to blame, but I did feel like I needed to cool off during the flight and the pillow was the first thing to go. Overall, I found this pillow to be a miracle worker. We were able to sleep (even my husband!) and we felt refreshed enough to enjoy day-one in NZ! I would love to be able to pay for business class, but short of that, I highly recommend the Travelrest pillow. It's a secret weapon for the common man!

Good travel pulliw
This a sturdy travel pillow. Seems supportive enough. It’s a little high therefore only 4 stars.

Amazing Travel Pillow!
This is the best travel pillow I've found in a low time. You really have to try it out to appreciate the ergonomic design;it curves around your shoulders and has a high back that cradles your head but also is a flat back so it rests against the seat without feeling like a rolled towel digging into the back of your neck. A lot of travel pillows talk about preventing front head-bob but to me this doesn't actually matter in real life, because head-bob only occurs when sitting upright but when you recline head-bob doesn't occur since your head is naturally falling back onto a reclined seat. That being sai, it head-bob is important to you this pillow is basically par-for-the-course in preventing which is mediocre, but like I said that doesn't even matter when reclined. The most important feature for me is how a pillow feels when I lean my head to the side toward my shoulder which is how I usually sleep on planes, and this pillow feels perfect. It's supportive yet soft. A lot of stiffer pillows or cervical-brace style feel like they dig into my cheek or neck and become uncomfortable after 10minutes, but not this pillow! Travel pillows are highly personal and I have hated some pillows that others have loved, but I would highly recommend anyone at least give this pillow a try!

Great Neck Support, But Overall a Fail
Like many people, I bought this based on the Wirecutter recommendation. I have three points (one positive, two negative) that, taken together, cause me to not recommend this neck pillow. 1 (positive): The pillow absolutely supports the head and prevents it from flopping over, as most of us do when we fall asleep sitting on an airplane. 2 (negative): The material, memory foam, is insanely hot. It is essentially is like wrapping a thick insulator around the neck. I found my neck was always sweaty from using it, and often my head as well. 3 (negative): the back of the pillow juts out significantly, which actually forces the head forward. It's a weird design, because most airplane seats are essentially flat, so of course the part of the pillow that juts out will cause the head to push forward. It was very uncomfortable, essentially forcing me to take it off. So, taken together, this pillow simply doesn't work. I don't understand how some people are able to make this thing work.

This is the pillow to get
I have three requirements for a travel pillow. 1. Support my head from falling forward 2. Let me wear my headphones 3. Be small and easy to pack I've tried a number of different styles and materials, everything from inflatables to stiff collars but nothing really worked well for me. Some were even worse than no pillow at all. On the recommendation of a review site, I gave the Travelrest Nest a try and I think I've finally found the best travel pillow for me. Here are some more details about the requirements above. 1. Support my head from falling forward Typical horseshoe-shaped pillows are abysmal at this requirement for two reasons. They have an open front and push your head or neck forward with too much cushioning in the back. The Travelrest has a nice, bulky front section and velcro closure is very helpful to keep it in place. If you tend to nod forward, your chin nestles into the front and stays put. The back of the pillow is also very well designed. Eliminating most of the cushioning from the back means it won't push your head forward. There's just enough padding to keep it comfortable. 2. Let me wear my headphones If you're going to run into a problem with this pillow, this is probably the place. When I wear over-the-ear headphones like the Bose QC 35, the pillow does contact the bottom of the ear cups. It tends to push the headphones up but I find that adjusting the head band for a smaller fit keeps the headphones on without a problem. If your neck is particularly short, you might have more of a problem with this. I've worn the Travelrest pillow for 11+ hour flights with my headphones on and been fine. 3. Be small and easy to pack The included stuff sack has a nice velcro strap that allows you to really compress the memory foam down to a manageable size. It's smaller than most other foam-based pillows but bigger than an inflatable or collar-type pillow. For me, the size is manageable and worth making room in my bag. See the attached photo for the actual compressed size. This will be my go-to travel pillow until I'm fortunate enough to not have to ride in coach again. Highly recommended.

Completely disappointed. I wasted my money on this.
Do not buy. Based on reviews, I had very high hopes for this neck pillow. However, using it was a different story. The pillow was not comfortable and did not provide the neck support I needed. It was awkward to wear and the Velcro strap did not make it conducive to carry around the airport hands-free. I could not strap it to my bag because the Velcro would not hold. Furthermore, the company is charging more than half of what I paid for this pillow to return it. NOT worth it. Could get a much better neck pillow for a fraction of the price.

Not comfortable
Wirecutter has led me astray once again. Took this neck pillow on an international flight. If you reliably fall sleep with your head to one side, this pillow ‘might’ work for you. However, if you are a forward head-nodder this is a fail. The support at the front of the pillow is nonexistent since that’s where the Velcro fastener is located. There’s really no way to tighten up the pillow enough to support your chin. When your head falls forward, your chin falls into the little opening where the Velcro connects. I also found that the sides of the pillow near the ears is too high, making it impossible to wear over ear headphones. The pillow edges are so high they bump against the bottom rim of the headphones. It works a little bit better if you are able to fully recline your seat, but still not recommended. I missed the return window so I’m eating the 40 bucks this item cost me.

Highly recommend but tough for a shorter neck
Full disclosure, this is the first travel neck pillow that I have bought for myself but I have borrowed plenty of others over the years so it's not my only experience using one. I finally broke down and bought one for my last trip which had 24+ hours flight time each direction and since I was flying economy, I knew I would need some comforts. I had read in other reviews that there is an odor to the pillow at first, which mine also had, so I left it out unfolded on my desk for a few days prior to traveling and had no issues with it after that. For actual use, I was impressed how easy it was to fold down in its bag, it compresses to about the size of a roll of toilet paper and if you read the instructions it's very easy. It also resizes very quickly. On my return trip, it had been bundled up in my bag for about two weeks so I was worried it would take a while to spring back into shape on the plane but I had no problem opening it up and using immediately. Support was great and the shape of it with the flat back and grippy material made it way easier to get some sleep on my 16 hour flight. The downside to this is that I do have a bit of a shorter neck so it was a tight fit. I couldn't easily have headphones or even just earbuds on while wearing it. I was also worried about it being too warm and I'm still on the fence about this. I had no issue with temp on my flight out however coming back I kept getting too warm and having to take it off. This could have had more to do with the human furnace sitting next to me while I was crammed in a middle seat. Overall this was a great purchase and definitely made sleeping in economy easier and a little more comfortable.

offers great support when you are sleeping sitting upright
I bought this prior to embarking on a 14 hour flight and was able to fall asleep without worrying I would wake up with a crick neck. So glad I purchased this item - very happy result.
