You attach the battery to the bottom of the device. The battery will last for approximately 4 hours on 2 liters. I am not certain about whether a medical supply store carries the batteries. I would call first.

Is it better to have 2 8 cell betteries or one 16 cell battery?

I have one of each. I like the 8 cell because it is lighter and easier to take shopping and for small trips. It usually last 3 hours and if I am in the car I can charge it up. The 16 is good for longer periods of time or if I need to be at level 4 because of more activities. The only negative I have found is the weight. So if you have difficulty carrying items I would get two 8 cell batteries
