Excellent
Here you have another typically fine entry from this Polish-produced series featuring a plethora of computer-generated drawings (text and captions entirely in English). Nearly, but never finally, completed, Nazi Germany's only aircraft carrier ended its days post-war as a Soviet target ship in the Baltic. Its sunken remains were only located in 2006, a fact noted here in the brief text which accompanies the many renderings. This book is all about the illustrations (there are no actual photographs) which range from wide overviews from numerous angles, to tight close-ups of specific fittings. If you are trying to imagine what this looks like, think of clear and highly detailed "artist's conception" paintings; these are not blueprint type diagrams. All illustrations are of the exterior; there is no attempt to depict interior spaces, companionways, etc. The objective of the book is to give the reader a general (brief) overview of the conception and history of the ship and a detailed look at how it appeared and was fitted out; at this, the volume succeeds perfectly. Includes a separate plans sheet (of the ship, ship's boats, armament, etc.) as a bonus. Highly recommended for modelers and students of the WWII Kriegsmarine.

A great look at Germany's unfinished aircraft carrier
The Graf Zeppelin, Germany's only aircraft carrier, has fascinated me. Here we have a collection of line drawings and computer generated pictures to show how this ship, which was never completed, would have looked. Fascinating to look at, and if you are a modeler interested in building a model of this ship this is a must have reference.

An unfinished ship that gets a lot of coverage
The 45th book (No. 16045) in Kagero's "Super Drawings in 3D" series is devoted to a ship that was never completed. As a result the appearance of this ship will be more speculative than the case for others in this series. For someone not in tune with the passions of military enthusiasts/modellers the incomplete German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin might seem a strange subject for this series. The fact is that the appetite for books about anything German in World War II is inexhaustible so that it is was inevitable that an unfinished German carrier would get a book in this series before any of dozens of British and American carriers with extensive service histories.Be all that as it may, this 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", 80 page, stapled card cover is really good. The text is fairly brief at parts of 4 pages and is supplemented by a specification table. The real attraction as always are the computer renderings. Again as always these are superb. What puts this book in the 5 star category for me are the well detailed captions. These are really informative and point out features like the operation of the strange pneumatic catapults and the recovery of their carriages. (I suspect these would not have been a great success in service.) Also, although very hard to see, the covers for the cycloidal propellers are also pointed out. There is also excellent commentary on boats, armament, aircraft, electronics, and more. About the only thing I can fault are no mention of the dual Kriegsmarine/Luftwaffe accommodations and command structure which would have been problematic in service. There is also an unbound foldout with 1:400 scale five view conventional line drawings supplemented by many fittings, boats, aircraft, etc in larger scales. All very well done.Highly recommended. This ship is fascinating primarily because it's an attempt by a major naval power to produce a class of ship it had no previous experience with. The design (if not the ship) emerged with many obsolescent features and did not compare well to American, British, or Japanese contemporaries but you have to start somewhere.
