Dora Goes to the Doctor/Dora Goes to the Dentist (Dora the Explorer) (Pictureback) Review: Helps children prepare for doctor/dentist visit - Early Intervention teacher - I am an Early Intervention teacher working with young children with delays or disabilities. This book is wonderful to help prepare young children for what to expect when they visit the doctor's or dentist's office. I work with many autistic toddlers, and this is very helpful for them especially to know what to expect (also known as a "social story"). I used it with my own son when he was small, and now I recommend it for many of the families I work with. I recommend using similar language to the book's when talking about the doctor's or dentist's office, and then while visiting the doctor/dentist office for full impact. Wonderful book overall! Review: Love the free stickers - Good book for toddlers who are scared to go to dentist or doctor. Very educated book .

Good Purchase
I never write reviews unless I purchase an item that really deserves a review. This book has been fantastic. I purchased this to help my two year old understand why we visit the doctor and dentist. He was really scared at his first dental visit. He screamed and cried the entire time. I saw a significant difference in his comfort level and level of understanding after reading this book to him. He was completely at ease while they cleaned his teeth during his recent dental visit. He didn’t cry and named the objects as they cleaned his teeth. He used to cry the second we walked into the pediatrician’s office but the last visit was great. My only compliant about this product is that the pages completely fell out of the binding. I definitely recommend this book for toddlers.

Read before appointments
The kids love reviewing Dora's experiences before going to the doctor and dentist. What a great way to set expectations and prepare children for appointments with doctors.

Decent Book, A few things to be aware of
This is one of a whole stack of books I've purchased recently to try and help our 4 year old special needs son prepare for an upcoming dental procedure he has scheduled in the hospital. While we've been running therapy modules for months to try and desensitize him to some of the more common equipment, there's no way we could tackle all of it in time, so I was planning on using stories to try and attempt to bridge the gap a little. They won't come anywhere near to solving all of the problems, but I want what he can expect to be as ingrained as possible in his mind. We got this book in particular because our son is obsessed with a couple of episodes of Dora, and I've recently discovered I could get him to accept some new books if they closely followed plot lines of his favorite shows, and I was hoping to piggy back off of that success with this. Now it wasn't clear to me when I ordered it that both the dentist book and the doctor book are bound together, with one book facing one way, and then you need to flip the book and turn it upside down to use the other one. Because of his love of Dora, he actually is looking through this right out of the box (enter happy dance and parental squeal of joy!), but he will only look at the Doctor story side. He's kind of freaked out and not sure what to make about the upside down dentist book, because none of his other books do that, so it's going to take some work, and if you have a child with Autism or any sort of syndrome that lends itself to a fixation on routine and love of things being a certain way, this could present a problem for you too. For both the Dr's office and the Dentist office portion, I have to say. We spend a lot of time in both, and I used to work in healthcare before I became the fabulous stay at home mom I am today. Many offices are going away from providing toys, books, etc. for a host of reasons. Many will provide a tv to watch, his dentist office provides a video game console. But I think children's books need to go away from emphasizing this. It was how it was when I was growing up, some of the time, but it is less and less becoming the case, and it's going to lead to false expectations unless you pack your own toys and books. Next, for the Dr's office, I think it really needed to include vaccines. Many well visits for younger children include them, and it is probably one of the more difficult part to get a child used to. Also, most offices don't use oral thermometers anymore. Many use tympanic (ear thermometer) or temporal artery forehead scanners, which are actually more accurate than most tympanic and oral thermometers. Last time any other type of thermometer was used on our son in a medical setting was a hospitalization he had as a baby, and they needed a rectal temperature. So I felt that part didn't accurately address an important piece of equipment that requires behavioral cooperation from a child to use. On the dentist side, most of the stuff they describe the dentist doing is actually done by the dental assistants these days, so I think that part may be misleading. I also have mixed feelings about the fact that they don't talk about the nitrous oxide or the Novocain administration that are common for cavity fillings. I like that it addresses cavity fillings, but again, I think we really need to be preparing children for the parts that will be hardest for them to handle. Overall, this is a solid book, and I'm pleased my son is actually showing interest in it. I just think a few items in here need to be discussed by the parent or they will lead to false expectations of the visits.

PREP for 2 year old dentist visit
I bought this book for my two year old daughter in order to prep for her first dentist visit. It worked perfectly. We read it each night for a week leading up to her dentist visit. I then brought it with us to the dentist so we could compare the pictures in the book to the real office. The best part is is that there are stickers she got as a reward after the dentist visit! Highly recommend! (Would work for the doctor too since the flip side is about Dora going to the doctor!).

Easy to read and great illustrations
My 2 and 5 year old love this book. You get 2 books in one. It was recommended by my family dentist when we started bringing my youngest in for check-ups. Goes over lots of dentist tools and shows the exam in a positive way. Bonus--lots of stickers so this book is fun to play with, too! Great value!!
