The Hunt

I just watched The Hunt (in Danish: Jagten) for the second time, and it retains its power as much on the second watch as when I originally saw it. This is a smart, well done, quite masterful bit of storytelling and filmmaking, lead by Mads Mikkelsen's subtle and carefully nuanced performance as Lucas, an innocent kindergarten teacher accused of child molestation.What's this film "about?" Mass hysteria comes to mind as the accusations Lucas faces are predicated on the lie told by one little girl and as the lie spreads, so it grows, until Lucas is railroaded and judged by the court of public opinion without the benefit of due process. What makes The Hunt particularly devastating is that Lucas's accusers are not strangers, but instead are people he has known his entire life, whose families have known his family going back generations, and who share the same traditions and cultural upbringing in their small town. It's like the 1600's Salem witch trials, set in Denmark today.There is an undercurrent of repressed masculine sexual tension in Lucas's town. The teen boys eagerly yelling over porn. The traditions of the town demand "boys to become men, and men to become boys" on a special day when boys are gifted their first hunting rifle and hunt an innocent deer. Lucas is a man who has been divorced from his wife for reasons which are never revealed and has not been allowed to call or to see his son, and he also has lost his high school teacher job, which has caused him to have to work in the kindergarten, something which his ex-wife considers shameful. Hence, Lucas is "feminine" by the standards of his town, he is at rock bottom, his masculinity has been diminished. One has to wonder if Lucas was penalized and victimized due to being a single male and , if he had been currently married when the events in the story unfolded, would the townspeople have so readily believed the tale of an imaginative child? Like the deer, Lucas gets the look of a hunted animal, nervous, fearful, innocent but ready prey set for slaughter for the pleasure of masculine men, a feast at the supper table courtesy of their bored wives. It does bring about the question also how many amazing men might make wonderful teachers, but do not dare take up this profession since the risk of life-ruining accusations is so high.The Hunt also demands that we examine victimhood to a certain extent. The change in Klara's mother is most striking. In the beginning, she is basically an absentee mother too busy to walk her daughter to school. Her clothing is somewhat young and she doesn't seem to have herself together. After the accusations occur, her clothing suddenly becomes matronly and her demeanor that of a martyr, as the townspeople rally behind her. In society, nobody loves a loser (Lucas) but everyone feels for a victim. Yet - do victims lie? And if the truth becomes known, to what lengths will martyrs go to continue their martyrdom?I find The Hunt fascinating as well because there are no bad guys here. It's not a Rambo situation where anyone is out to get Lucas. It's a bunch of well meaning individuals making choices based on the fact they believe they are doing the right thing.What The Hunt leaves us with is a sense that there are many victims in this story. Lucas is an obvious victim, especially as his character will always be in doubt even after the events of the story have unfolded, but one has to wonder what will happen to this town as a result of a little girl crying wolf. How will Grethe, the school administrator, respond should such a case happen again? What kind of psychological damage has already happened to the little girl, Klara, and may continue as she grows up? What about the damaged friendships in this tight knit community? And so forth.Overall, the subject matter is rough and possibly triggering for some. This is not a popcorn film or something you watch on date night. It is slow moving, its strengths being the finely crafted performances by the actors and actresses, the director, Thomas Vinterberg, not taking it into American-style "one man against the world" territory, but instead allowing the story to intimately unfold. Simply taking a peek into everyday Danish life, how homes are decorated, what these people wear, their traditions, is neat as well, everyday people doing everyday things, which lends the story extra power and allows the plot, an innocent man going about his life until something extreme happens to him, to really hit hard.All in all, a fantastic and very relevant piece of cinema.

This is a great film ! Mads Mikkelsen is one of my 'new' favorite actors ! I have seen him in other films and he doesn't disappoint . I purchased this on DVD from AMAZON . It arrived quick . It was a great transaction all over . I highly recommend this film to everyone !! -- oh - I wanted to say that I had to buy this DVD because it was not available anywhere else . Our options are limited . We don't have video stores anymore . It is not on cable . ( I don't know if it will ever ) . So what choice do I (we) have ?? This is a great movie but not a movie that I am going to want to watch over and over again . Do you know what I mean ? - Now its in my collection . If I should live another 50 years , I will put this dvd in 5 or 6 more times in those 50 yrs . And thats if I have company . This little venting I am doing here is not just about this film in particular . It is just the way things are now in this crazy world we all live in and its only going to get worse with all the changes . God I remember it was such a privilege to 'rent' a video ! We would make a night out of it . My parents did it with us kids , and I did it with my kids . Go rent a movie or 2 - get some popcorn and drinks and shut the lights off . We just don't have that moment anymore ! Hell-- even my wife works the night shift and my kids are always either out with their boyfriends and girlfriends or on the those damned iPHONES !!!! The things I (we) took for granted . I never thought those days would end . ---- Anyway - sorry about that . This is a great movie . Watch it . Thank You .

I saw this movie three times during its all-too-short run in New York City art houses. This is a deeply-absorbing adult film that grips you from the start and never lets go. You are on the edge of your seat rooting for this man's life to somehow turn around. Mads Mikkelsen - best known to American audiences as "Hannibal" on the TV series - stars in this film. He has been a major star in Europe for years, and how lucky we are to finally have him in the USA. He plays a character, Lucas, who is wrongfully accused of sexually assaulting a small child, the daughter of his best friend. He is the victim of vicious lies that snowball out of control. Everyone can relate to what this character is going through because we have all at some time been the victim of rumors and lies. Except that what this character is going through is 1,000 times worse than most things I can think of. The supporting cast are all perfect in their roles. Although Mads Mikkelsen's role on "Hannibal" is striking, it gives us a limited view of his acting abilities. But there is nothing this actor cannot do. I know, because after seeing "The Hunt," I rented or bought about 8 of his films, and I would recommend that you do the same. I haven't been this impressed with an actor in about 10 years. No, make that 20. Hopefully the good word will get out and it will receive a wider release. Mads deserves an Oscar for this, and the film deserves "Best Foreign Film."

Über den Film ist viel geschrieben worden. Er ist, schon am Beginn will ich meine subjektive Meinung sagen, einer der besten Filme über das Thema, und zwar "wie ist es, wenn die Kinder eigentlich nicht lügen, aber auch mit der Wahrheit ihre Probleme haben".Ein dänisches Dort oder eine kleine Stadt. Lucas (Mads Mikkelsen) arbeitet im Kindergarten. Die Schule ist nämlich geschlossen, so musste er eine neue Stelle finden als Lehrer, das war die einzige Möglichkeit, wie es scheint.Im Lucas' Leben hat sich in der letzten Zeit ziemlich viel verändert. Er lebt geschieden von seiner Frau, sein vierzähnjähriger Sohn Marcus (Lasse Fogelstrøm) will zu ihm ziehen. Lucas hat einen Hund (eigentlich Hündin), die immer bellt, wenn man den Namen seine Ex sagt. Er hat, so scheint es, viele Freunde. Sie alle sind irgendwie im Ort geblieben, kennen sich, die Männer teilen eine Leidenschaft - die Jagd. Man wundert sich, als man Lucas, der so still und sanft daherkommt, beim Schießen sieht. Konzentriert und "männlich".Die Freunde trinken manchmal ein oder mehrere Biere, besprechen die Neuigkeiten, sie helfen sich, anscheinend ist der Ort fast idyllisch.Es passiert nicht viel. Als Lucas sich nach der Scheidung sehr vorsichtig mit Nadja (Alexandra Rapaport), einer Ausländerin, anfreundet, ist der Ort nicht zufrieden. Man bleibt unter sich - mehrere Leben oder Generationen lang.Lucas Freund Theo hat eine, sagen wir, intakte Familie. Die kleine Klara (Annika Wedderkopp), die immer nach unten sehen muß, weil sie die Streifene auf der Straß zählt, hat Lucas besonders gern. Sie gehen öfter zusammen, wenn sich Theos Frau Agnes (Anne Louise Hassing) verspätet. Lucas hat viel von einem Kind in sich. Und das fühlen die Kleinen und mögen ihn.Klara hat ihm (heimlich) ein Herz gebastelt und ihm in die Tasche gesteckt. Lucas spricht mit ihr, möchte, dass sie das Geschenk ihrem Vater oder ihrer Mutter gibt. Klara streitet alles ab, sie hat ja nichts gemacht, dann wird sie - beleidigt?Als sie zuhause bei ihrem Bruder einige Bilder mit nackten Photos sieht, erzählt sie Grethe (Susse Wold), der Chefin, Lucas hat ihr "etwas gezeigt" und beschreibt das ziemlich genau."Den Kindern muß man immer glauben", so lautet die Meinung von Grethe. Sie holt sich einen befreundeten Pedagogen, der Klara "ausfragt". Die arme Kleine, sie sagt, es sei nichts wahr, aber die Fragen des "Spezialisten" sind so suggestiv, dass sie nur noch mit dem Kopf "ja" andeuten kann.Noch am selben Abend werden alle Eltern über den Verdacht unterrichtet. Nur Lucas erfährt ungefähr, wessen man ihn beschuldigt und wird sofort suspendiert.Es beginnt eine Zeit, in der sich Lucas immer mehr zurückzieht, seine Freunde meiden ihn. Die Tuscheleien werden immer lauter. Jetzt soll er schon mehrere Kinder belästigt haben. Es spielt keine Rolle, dass sein Haus keinen Keller hat, wo die "Ergeignisse" stattfinden sollen. Wo Rauch ist, ist IMMER Feuer. Er ist ein Ausgestoßener, ein Corpus alienum, ein Fremder, weniger als das. Ein FREIWILD! Als Jäger kennt er vermutlich diesen Gefühl...Im örtlichen Market wird er nicht mehr bedient. Die Polizei holt ihn ab. Was für "Schande", er kommt nach Hause! Wo ist die Gerechtigkeit, empören sich seine einstige Freunde!?Auch Marcus wohnt jetzt bei ihm. Aber, es wird immer gefährlicher. Nur Bruun (Lars Ranthe), der auch Patenonkel seines Sohnes ist, hält zu ihm...Ohne wenn und aber!Still ist es geworden. Aber die Stille birgt Gefahr. Die Menschen fragen sich nicht, ob vielleicht Lucas die Wahrheit sagt. Es wäre zu schwierig zu akzeptieren, dass die Kinder unbewusst, natürlich (?) auch grausam sein können. Und ein solcher Mensch gehört sowieso nicht zu ihnen.Doch, man wundert sich, Lucas bleibt. Fast trotzig geht er langsam auf der Straße, sein Gesicht geschwollen, man hat ihn verprügelt. Er zeigt die "Narben" äußerlich; die innere Zerissenheit, Einsamkeit, die Wunden der Seele sieht keiner. Will auch keiner sehen...Wie leicht ist es einen Menschen, den man bis vor einigen Tagen "bestens gekannt hat", der ein "wahrer" Freund war, zum Monster zu stilisieren.Kann man den Menschen das verübeln? In der Zeit, wo man jeden Grund hat (früher ja auch), dass eigene Kinder in einem ruhigen Ort, wo sich ALLE kennen, nicht sicher sind? Kann man eine Mutter verstehen, die NUR auf die Geschichte des Kindergartenpersnals hört? Wer kennt schon die Tiefen unserer Seelen, die Grausamkeit, die sich hinter der Fassade verbirgt?Hier weiß der Zuschauer, dass Lucas unschuldig ist. Dass er sogar das Geschenk nicht annehmen wollte. Nur ein Gedanke - WARUM? Hatte er unbewusst Angst, schlechte Erfahrungen? Er, als einziger Mann im Kindergarten, der sowieso lieber mit den Jungen spielt/e.NIE kommt der Gedanke auf, dass Lucas irgendwas Klara hätte tun können. Und trotzdem glauben die Menschen sofort, dass er das machen könnte. WARUM? Hat der Regisseur Thomas Vinterberg hier eine verstecke Botschaft plaziert?JEDER könnte Täter/in werden. Vielleicht nur in den Gedanken...Lucas bekommt nur wenig Hilfe...Damit die Geschichte noch tragischer wirkt, passiert das vor Weihnachten, einem Fest der Familie und der Liebe. Auch die Kirche gibt ihm keine Absolution...nur schlimme Erinnerungen.Wir alle könner die Bewohner dieses Ortes in Dänemark werden. Wann? Wenn es um die Kinder geht! Wenn es öffentlich ist! HInter den Türen geschehen Tragödien, bei denen die Kinder als die Schwächsten den Horror erleben. Darüber spricht man nicht. Klara kann auch nicht sagen, wer ihr die Bilder gezeigt hat. Man würde ihr NICHT glauben, wenn schon, dann wäre eine kleine Strafe für ihren Bruder fällig.War Lucas auch deswegen ein perfektes Opfer, weil er allein lebte? Weil er etwas langsamer, schweigsamer als die anderen war? Weil er DIE Möglichkeit hatte bei der Arbeit mit den Kindern?Man kann die Menschen sogar teils verstehen, die Frauen im Kindergarten auch noch, auf keinen Fall aber den un­pro­fes­si­o­nellen "Facharbeiter".Lucas ist ein Opfer und irgendwie ein "naiver Täter".Wie würden Sie reagieren, wenn sie selbst betroffen wären - ihr Kind, ihr/e Enkel/in? Hinterfragen oder glauben? Und, würden sie wollen, dass ein "solcher" Mensch weiterhin im Ort lebt? Als ein Mahnmal, falls er sich herausstellt, er ist unschuldig....Fragen über Fragen!Mads Mikkelsen spielt so gut, dass ich ihn gebannt gesehen habe, mit ihm gelitten habe...Er ist - perfekt. Theo als Vater von Klara (Thomas Bo Larsen) - auch grandios. Überhaupt ist der Film fast so gut wie "Der Fest" (einer der schwierigsten Filmen von Vinterberg). Ein Horror ohne "Horror", eine Geschichte, die tief unter die Haut geht, die direkt ins Herz sticht und uns...zurücklässt.Die Rezensenten vor mir (viele sind es) haben unterschiedliche Meinungen gehabt, ist normal - ich möchte mich bei Rumbu (Zauberer), Ray (der immer da ist), Steffi (My, Girl, Du weisst schon), Roxy (meinen Freundin) und, ja, man staune, bei SIR Stephan. Sein Beitrag ist schon als Titel - perfekt. DANKE an alle, nicht nur an die Genannten!

Voilà un film que je catégoriserai personellement comme de l'horreur, non pas parce qu'il y a des scènes violentes ou gore (au contraire c'est un film très simple qui ne possède pas vraiment de violence), mais simplement parce que ce film a su capturer mon plus grand cauchemar, se faire accuser d'un acte attroce (et pas n'importe lequel) dont on est innocent. Je ne vais pas dire plus, mais je pense en effet que tout homme va avoir l'impression de s'être reçu une claque à la gueule arrivé à la fin du film. Ca ne veut pas dire que ce film n'aura pas le même impacte pour les femmes, au contraire ma copine a tout autant adoré La Chasse et pour les mêmes raisons que moi. Mais voilà, ce film m'a chamboulé, et je le conseille vraiment à tout le monde.Il était temps que ce thême soit aborder sous cette angle et je pense que toute personne qui aime les films provocants mais de manière simple et respectueuse, va adorer ce film.Au sujet du Blu-Ray, tout est impeccable, même si j'aurais aimé avoir un peu plus de bonus. En dehors de ça, le seul commmentaire que j'ai est que je trouve dommage que tout film Européens ou Asiatiques qui sorte en DVD et Blu-Ray en France (ou autre pays voisins francophones) n'aient que l'option de sous-titres français. Je ne pense pas que ce soit si dur de rajouter quelques langues en plus pour les sous-titres, tel que l'anglais, l'espagnol, l'arabe ou autre. Ayant beaucoup d'amis internationaux, c'est dommage que je ne puisse pas partager certains de mes films préférés avec eux.

Se nos llena la boca de decir que todos somos inocentes hasta que se demuestre lo contrario. Pero cuando nos tocan las emociones se nos olvida. Vemos la tele y sacamos nuestras propias conclusiones, hacemos nuestro propio juicio paralelo. Se supone que vale más un culpable libre que un inocente en prisión. Pero lo cierto es que solo pensamos así cuando somos nosotros el inocente. Si el inocente es otro, nos sentimos más seguros si el inocente está en prisión. Los sentimientos están por encima, incluso, de la amistad. La peli es ideal para que la vea todo aquel que tenga hijos para darse cuenta de que algunas veces la visión de las cosas se ve distorsionada por los sentimientos. En cualquier circunstancia, antes de condenar automáticamente a alguien, tendríamos que preguntarnos: "¿Y si, pese a todo, es inocente?".Muy buena película. Magnífica interpretación del protagonista y de la niña.
