Carrageenan is extracted from its raw material, a red colored seaweed, Chondrus crispus, which grows along the coast of the Northern part of the Atlantic by boiling with water at high temperatures. The liquid extract is purified by centrifugation and/or filtration. The liquid extract is converted into a powder by simple evaporation of water to yield the dried carrageenan.

Ratios are difficult to specify without knowing what you are doing. However generally speaking you are in the 0.5-1.5% for most liquids. However, the wonderful thing about recipes is that we all get to experiment and form our opinions and evn more speciall create our own secret recipes :-)
