This product is bagged from Giles Chemical, a division of Premier Magnesia, Magriculture brand agricultural-grade magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO4•7H2O). It is not USP (United States Pharmacopeia) grade Epsom salt for human use. Epsom Salt can be manufactured from natural sources or from chemical precursors. It is named for the town of Epsom in Surrey England which has a bitter saline spring where the salt was first produced. Both magnesium and sulfur are important plant nutrients. Magnesium is at the center of the chlorophyll molecule. It is part of enzymes used in the creation and transport of cellular energy with the ATP molecule and in the creation of RNA and DNA molecules along with many other enzymatic processes. Sulfur is sometimes called the fourth major plant nutrient after Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium, the NPK values on fertilizers. Acid rain supplies much of soil sulfur, but with heavy harvesting and better emission controls, more sulfur can beneficial. The main use Epsom salt in horticulture is for a magnesium soil supplement. Most magnesium deficient soils are acidic sandy soils that allow the mineral to be leached out. Heavy clay soils can also be deficient. In clay soils the ratio of calcium, potassium, and magnesium is critical in ensuring each mineral can be free to be taken up by plant roots. A soil test is the only way to know how much you need. Epsom Salt is often used for potatoes, roses, tomatoes, and peppers. Due to its dissolvability, it is an excellent foliar spray and may work better than a soil drench in avoiding the soil chemistry problems. Its dissolvability means it will not build up in the soil, but it will not last long in the soil either. Keep your levels of organic matter in the soil high with regular top dressing of compost.
