Product Description Not only is Thoroughly Modern Millie a zany romantic spoof of the Roaring Twenties, it’s a musical that won an Oscar for Best Original Music Score! Julie Andrews stars as Millie, an innocent country girl who comes to the big city in search of a husband. Along the way she becomes the secretary of the rich and famous Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), befriends the sweet Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), fights off white slaver Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) and hooks up with a lively paper clip salesman, Jimmy (James Fox). In the end it takes a rich nutty jazz baby like Muzzy (Carol Channing) to unravel all these complications, give a great party, and match up lovers.Bonus Content: Theatrical Trailer Recommendations desertcart.com Julie Andrews is at her peak of adorability in this enjoyable (and surprisingly sarcastic) spoof of the 1920s. It has every trick: occasional silent-movie intertitles, flapper lingo ("Oh, banana oil"), and a laughable plot about women being sold into white slavery by the scheming manageress (splendid Beatrice Lillie) of a Hotel for Ladies, aided by a cabal of wicked Chinese. (The stereotypes are bearable only if you remember this is a spoof of silent movie melodrama.) Even with able support from Mary Tyler Moore and James Fox, this is Julie's show; she plays to the camera with the collusion of director George Roy Hill, who's clearly smitten with her silly streak. The movie has an annoying tendency to spend time on musical numbers--a Jewish wedding, a vaudeville act--that don't serve the plot. A future Broadway musical would create a new score, except for the delightfully catchy title tune. --Robert Horton Review: My favorite movie of all time. - I found the liner notes of the record when I was very young, and was enchanted with the story. This movie, set in 1922, is a comedy, thriller, mystery, romance and musical all rolled into one. One day, I saw the original movie on late night t.v., and it instantly became my all-time favorite. It was just so much fun! So silly, and so great seeing a young Mary Tyler Moore; and Carol Channing and Julie Andrews were in top form. I loved all the wacky dance numbers, and the music was terrific. I loved the authentic period details that the director had clearly gone to a great deal of trouble to produce. Since there are several key scenes in Chinatown, this movie could be fun to watch with someone else while eating Chinese takeout. It's a bit long, though...it even has an intermission. Making a couple of minor allowances for attitudes of the time, it is a happy, feel-good movie, and it will put a smile on your face. (btw, this movie, the original Thoroughly Modern Millie, is quite different from the modern stage musical. Sadly, all the music is different in the stage version.) Review: My very favorite movie. It is a comedy - My very favorite movie. It is a comedy, musical, romance, adventure, and mystery all in one. I especially like the music and mystery aspects the best. You cannot go wrong with the well rounded movie. Great cast with Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore. Mary Tyler Moore is so different (yet lovely and great) in this movie, I can hardly recognize her even after watching it multiple times. And I will never grow tired of Julie Andrews as she is one of my favorites to begin with. I also enjoyed seeing Pat Morita in an earlier role (than Karate Kid). Never a dull moment in this movie with comedy at every turn. Great music also--the Tapioca is especially fun. The only part I am not sure why they put in the movie is the Jewish wedding which Julie Andrews sings for. It is wonderful to hear her singing and see the dancing as well as get a better understanding of Jewish culture. However, if you prefer to forward through it, you really will not miss a beat in the movie.

Wonderful!
I haven't enjoyed a movie more in a long time than watching "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Julie Andrews was just wonderful in this film as well as Mary Tyler Moore with the added bonus of Carol Channing playing Muzzy. I was browsing on amazon for any Julie Andrews movies and this gem came up. I had never seen or heard of this film, and after watching it was not dissapointed! Set in the "Roaring 20's", Millie (Julie Andrews) whom is looking for a husband Trevor Graydon (played by John Gavin) goes and lives in New York city at an all girls boarding house run by Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) a front-lady for an oriental white slavery ring. Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) leaves home to find "her way in the world" also comes to New York city and meets Millie at the same boarding house. The two girls together create quite a pair in their zany, wacky ways in this madcap of a movie. The antics that happen will leave you falling off the couch with laughter! This is a movie that the entire family would enjoy. It is funny, heart-warming, suspenseful, and thrilling. I would encourage anybody who wants clean, quality entertainment in their home to purchase a copy for their DVD library. It's a classic! Format: Color, Widescreen, 2hrs 32 min. Excellent
The movie is sweet and a charm with an outstanding cast: Julie Andrews, Carol Channing, Mary Tyler Moore and (mostly) stage actress Beatrice Lillie in a nefarious role. An lighthearted romp period piece picture directed by George Roy Hill who also helmed Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and Best Picture Oscar The Sting.

Find out why this musical was good enough to go to Broadway
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a reminder that once upon a time in Hollywood singing stars made B-musicals. Here is a classic example from the career of Julie Andrews that reminds us her career was not all mega-hits like "Sound of Music" and super-flops like "Star." Unfortunately for lovers of musicals Hollywood stopped marking movies like this, leaving singing stars with Olivia Newton-John with a smash like "Grease" and a bomb like "Xanadu" with nothing in between. I also have fond memories of "Thorough Modern Millie" because it was a movie that was shown to us in class in high school; the reason why we were allowed this privilege is beyond me, unless we were supposed to get an appreciation of the Roaring Twenties from this film (so why did they show us the original version of "The Blob?"). Our flapper heroine is Millie Dillmount (Andrews), who has decided to be a "mod" and turned in her long curls for a stylish bob. Her goal in life is to marry her boss and after interviewing several possibilities she hits the jackpot with Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), who hires her as his stenog and calls Millie "John" (as in "Johnny on the spot"). Millie likes young Jimmy (James Fox), who impresses her by inventing a new dance called the Tapioca and being a swell kisser, but he is poor and Millie has her ambitions. Millie's best gal-al is Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), who is sweet, innocent, and has lots of curls. However, the life of Millie and her friends are caught between two imposing characters. At the hotel for young women where Millie lives there is Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), who is always looking out for young girls who are "all alone in the world," like Miss Dorothy, who could be of use to a Chinese White Slavery ring. But Millie also encounters an unstoppable force for life in the person of the irrepressible Muzzy (Carol Channing), who lives the good life at her Long Island "Cottage" estate and pops up at key moments throughout the narrative. The movie is not a great musical, mainly because it does not have any really great songs (as evidenced by the fact that the current Broadway musical has almost entirely new songs), but it is still great fun. Director George Roy Hill takes advantage of Andrews' comic flair and the film has great fun with her double takes and comic title cards as Millie periodically comments on the proceedings. The movie does employ stereotypes of the Chinese, but you have to admit these are balanced between the comic relief of Mrs. Meers' henchmen (Jack Soo and Pat Morita) and the wise old Tea (Philip Ahn). "Thoroughly Modern Millie" won an Oscar for music and Channing was nominated for supporting role (she won a Golden Globe for her efforts, were clearly tailored to her style). But Lillie is a delight as well and I personally enjoy Gavin's mock-heroic performance. Moore just has to look sweet, although she does get to say a bad word (!), and Fox is charming although clearly too young for Andrews. Unfortunately the debacle of "Star" pretty much derailed Andrews' musical career in Hollywood, which is a loss because the comic flair she shows here is the same that she showcased in films like "Victor, Victoria" a couple of decades later. The good news is that the Broadway show will bring this film back to the public's notice; I am sure that is the reason I have spent the morning watch the film on TV.

Exactly the movie we need now. I first saw in the theatre with my parents in 1967! Loved it then and now. Supremely entertaining and funny and well.......Julie.........totally sublime. Tuneful and funny, maybe a bit long-ish in the second half but what a treat to watch. They have done a magnificent job of restoring the film. It looks as if it were filmed yesterday. Even Julie's freckles on display. Add Mary Tyler Moore, James Fox and Oscar nominated Carol Channing.........don't pass this up. It took a long time to find and order but I did and it's just the tonic for these times. So beat the drums cause here comes Millie now!:-)
