Beautifully written book!
This book took me back to my childhood! Skipping rocks on the pond with my brothers, kicking a rock ahead of me on the way to school, climbing rocks while on a picnic with my family.......so touching and sentimentally written! I can't wait to share it with my grandsons who always have a rock in their pockets! And, btw, I still collect interesting rocks on walks and hikes and I'm 55 years old! Love this book!

Missed opportunity for diversity
This poetic book describes many different kinds of rocks we all remember from childhood. There are chalky rocks for making rocks, smooth rocks for skipping, and more. It's a reminder that some childhood experiences are universal. With that in mind, it feels unfortunate that all of the full photos of children show children who are white. This book would be perfect for educational and library story time settings if it felt a little more inclusive.

A Book to Encourage Thoughtful Observance
This book, ostensibly for children, could engage anyone. It could occupy a place on a coffee table, as the photos have a dreamy hand tinted look that is timeless and soothing, and the gentle poetry of the words is simple yet pleasing. Who among us has not found mysterious and beautiful, unusual or commonplace rocks to handle and examine, contemplating their origin and possible meaning? Like a pleasing pebble, found and admired, this book is a treasure. I am sending it to a five year old, and will include one small ordinary rock I found and bonded with decades ago, knowing that the child will appreciate both since she has already begun a life of discovery and reverence for things as simple as small rocks along her path.

Seeing the World through a Child's Eyes
What a marvelous book. It grabs and hold your interest and the interest of my 1, 3, and 6 year old. We borrowed this from the library and today I am purchasing it online. This well written book shows the joy of rocks. Most of us have at one time or another have kicked a rock in front of us. Now you can learn why! Many of us have sat on a rock and now we see why it was such a perfect place to sit. Introduce your children to the wonders of the world around them with this exceptional book. Now I am on a mission to find any other books by this author. This is not a rock identification book, but rather a book that teaches observation and appreciation of rocks.

Great Book
I bought this book for my 7 year old grandson who loves rocks. It is not a colorful book at all with pretty pictures of rocks but he loved the story. It talks about all the different kinds of rocks you might find. (example:a skipping rock, a chalk rock, a moss rock) It doesn't identify the rocks as granite, sandstone, etc. but it talks more about the places you would find rocks. After reading the book, my grandson and I went rock hunting and he mentioned several times about things we had read in the book. He loves the book.

Great book for little boys
Not that the book isn't nice for girls, but this is a great book for little boys. There is something comforting about rocks. Studying rocks in geology is very stabilizing, very stable. There are no serious ethical issues with rocks such as genetic engineering and mutations. Rocks evolve and then the de-evolve back to a simpler form in a wonderful cycle. This book, of course, does not get into all that, it bascially poetically teaches children about different categories of rocks, and that rocks are... well, your friend. You can have a lot of fun with rocks. It has photos, more or less poetry, and is a great book for Kindergarten to first grade. Girls will like it, boys will like it, but its a first choice for little boys.

Great book
I teach second grade and love this book for encouraging children to appreciate the beauty of rocks. I am a rockhound myself and encourage that in children. This book is a great find.

Not a very large content but still a nice book
I bought this book because locally there is a lot of interest in the collecting, painting designs on, hiding for others to find various rocks and stones of different shapes and sizes. This book is not about that craze but has poems and writing about the various rocks that can be found and their uses i.e. skimming rock, memory rock etc. If you are into the craze of rock collecting you would probably enjoy this little book.

so la-la
A thoughtful book that would appeal to rock lovers.... but didn't turn on any switches with my rock-loving 6 year old. Not really worth the purchase.

Really nice easy read!
Hi, I would definitely recommend this book. It's a quick read, has lots of little ideas and things to do when you find different rocks. I bought it for my Granddaughters 9th birthday. She thought it was quote, "cool" as she put it. It was not hard for her to read, made her want to go look for rocks and find some that were like the ones in the book. It's a really nice book to read together with your kids or grandkids. Great for spending some quality time together. I hope you will enjoy this great little book as much as we did.
