A Functional, If Simplistic, GCSE Biology Textbook
The OCR Gateway GCSE Biology Student Book is a competent resource for students working towards their GCSEs. Compared with D.G. Mackean’s Introduction to Biology, which I used for O-Level, this textbook feels rather basic in its depth and breadth. It is also filled with the now-expected environmentalist slant, which, while topical, can come across as overemphasised at times. That said, the book does what it needs to do. It is clearly laid out, with concise explanations and plenty of diagrams to aid understanding. The practice questions and summaries at the end of each chapter are helpful for revision. It focuses strongly on preparing students for the specific demands of the OCR Gateway GCSE, which, ultimately, is what matters. Despite my reservations, my daughter achieved an excellent grade at GCSE, so the book has evidently fulfilled its purpose. While it may lack the rigour of older texts, it is a practical and effective tool for modern students. Recommended with minor grumbles.
