My favorite Sherlock Holmes
This was my favorite book, and I enjoyed this movie version as only the incomparable Basil Rathbone could play it. Nigel Bruce as Watson is beyond compare.

The first pairing of the best Holmes and Watson
Not directed the best and even some acting seemed a little off but after this initial offering, these Holmes/Watson movies rovked! Great plot and an interesting movie that will keep folks engaged.

Best Rathbone Holmes movie
Love this movie. Rathbone and Bruce are wonderful, as always. And supporting cast is great.

Basil Rathbone in Hound of the Baskerville
This is as good as any of the series of Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone. Made in 1939 with Nigel Bruce, Richard Green, Wendy Barrie, Lionel Atwill, E.E. Clive and John Carradine. The movie run is 80 minutes in black and white (of course). It is suspenseful and has a good story line. The one thing I don't like is the seance. I don't dabble in spiritism or the occult and don't choose to view it in any form. It's very short..easy to fast forward. Richard Green, traveling from abroad, inherits a castle on the moors of England which is said to be haunted. There are many mysterious occurences. His life is endangered even before he arrives at his destination. Holmes is called upon to protect him. The hound, part of the mystery, is supposed to be a threat to Richard Green. Although no one has seen it evidence is found in the form of the death of various people. He is heard periodically howling throughout the movie. The end I will leave for the audience as I hate knowing the end before I view it. Hope this helps.

Excellent--it will be shown in my class on Monday. the students absolutely loved reading Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, and now viewing this particular film copy for comparison of the two forms--is wonderful. Thank you.

Poor quality video transfer
DVD arrived next day, well packaged and in a cellophane wrapper, so full marks for that, however the film itself is in a very low resolution and the picture has far too much contrast. I acknowledge that this is a DVD version of a black and white film from 1939 however the quality is far higher on TV broadcasts and YouTube channels. DVD menu is basic but cute - someone has taken the time to add little pawprints for some of the icons.

Rathbone did a good job of acting in this film
This is a classic and in the collection because of that as well as B. Rathbone did a good job of acting in this film. I think J. Brett is better though , bit not by a lot.
