Update. My 55 has been in use since May 18th with no overheat shutdowns. On June 9th I updated from software version 2.30 to version 2.70. Still running with no shutdowns. *** This is the best Garmin dash cam so far. When operated in the “1080p, 30fps, HDR” mode, the scenery ahead no longer goes white when driving through a dark underpass, as it did with the Gamin 20 and 35. The voice control works well, even when spoken at conversational levels and not looking at the camera. I really like to be able to take a picture without reaching for a button on the camera. The camera is so small that it is completely hidden from me by my rearview mirror. The time-lapse video feature is pretty cool. And audio recording feature has returned after an absence on the Garmin 35. I don’t consider the Forward Collision Warning System or the Lane Departure Warning System a nuisance. They make you think about your driving a bit more. Anyway, you can turn them off. I have not experienced any overheating problems with the camera, even though I have parked with the camera in the direct sun light on hot days. I have the screen brightness set at 60% but I can’t say if that has had any effect on the temperature of the camera. It does get warm. Directing air conditioning partially toward the windshield might help, if there is a problem. The small size does make the camera less noticeable to someone passing by. I installed a circularly polarized lens on my camera which had the salutary effect of covering that gold band on the camera lens. The polarized lens reduces windshield/dashboard glare on bright days and especially when traveling toward the sun. See attached photo. The magnetic mount is very convenient. I am sure it will be more reliable than suction cups when the weather turns cold. I am also sure the camera is going to go flying in an accident, but at least it will show all the facts and circumstances up to the impact. I had rigged up a magnetic mount using four super magnets for my Gamin 35 and it flew off when I slammed on the brakes to avoid a car that pulled out in front of me. My one gripe is the 1 minute video clip length. I would rather it be 3 or 5 minutes. The Garmin software chokes up when trying to splice together hundreds of clips from a long car trip. This is the best of four dash cams that I have. (20, 35 and KDlinks X1) I will report back if there are any overheating problems.

This dash cam is one of the best purchases I have ever made on Amazon, and probably in general. I wanted a dash cam for a long time but struggled on selecting the right one for me since there is a large variety of options. While this definitely isn't the cheapest, it is small, easy to install, and has an easy to use app that goes along with it. This voice controlled camera makes it easy to save videos and pictures as well as change settings on the fly. There is an optional motion detection setting that requires a bit more involved setup and another cable, but even without it this camera is well worth the money. The driving alerts such as lane-departure and front collision warnings range from useless to a minor driving aid depending on how well you calibrate them, but the overall package can't be beat. If you're looking for a camera that also records the back, this probably isn't for you. Update 7/20/22: Camera had seemingly died after about 3 years, which is unfortunate due to the price. Lens currently has a giant black spot making us completely unusable despite no exterior damage

Recently purchased two Garmin 55 and two parking mode wiring harness. The camera is great in its small size and function. I didn't want a cord coming down and plugging into the cigarette lighter even if the cord is long enough to be hidden in the headliner and molding. If you are going to that effort you might as well make it seamless and hard wire it to your fuse box under your steering wheel so I also bought the parking mode cable. Youtube has some good videos and for a first time installer it was easier than I thought. The two things you must buy from an auto parts store (about $8 each if they have the extra fuses and about $6 if they don't ) are two add-a- fuse adapters - make sure you get the right size add-a-fuse adapter as one car had the low profile fuses and the other didn't. Because the end of the wire of the harness is bare wire you need to crimp it into the adapter to plug into the fuse panel. Each adapter has two slots (use a 10A for both the battery and the accessory wire) so that it will have two fuses to accommodate the dash cam and whatever was being powered originally. This third wire is ground and that does not need an adapter. Once you get it up and running it is seamless and you do not need to do anything once you start your car. It does have a legal notice that comes up every time with a prompt to "agree" but you don't need to press any button as it will go away in about 10-15 seconds. In fact, you probably shouldn't as anytime you touch this small camera as it is very easy to alter the aim point by mistake. About the parking mode. It is motion activated and I turned it off since one time I came back to my car and I had 17 parked mode videos stored. Apparently light and distant movement trigger the activation. Still, the parking mode wiring is exactly what I needed for keeping the console uncluttered and not even noticing the camera as it barely peeks out beneath my rear view mirror.

After having purchased two "cheapo" imported dashcams, I decided it was time to buy something more substantial since I rely on it every day. The first thing I noticed was how tiny the thing is. It mounts to the glass by way of a small adhesive magnet. The power cord is also magnetic and not the typical micro USB. Though other mounting configurations can be had. A word about the memory card: DO NOT skimp on quality. In fact, I learned that some cards are not good enough. I purchased a Transcend 32GB High Endurance card. Basic low-end cards will fail. The resolution upon playback is highly detailed and it sees well at night. The features that sets this Garmin apart from the "imported" cams are unique. It uses voice commands - after saying "Okay Garmin" it allows the user to take a picture, save a video, etc. When sitting at a light or in traffic, once the traffic starts moving, it signals me to look forward - which really comes in handy at times when I'm distracted by my dog or my phone. If I veer from my lane, another warning sounds. But the warning that I disabled is the collision avoidance. I found it annoying - especially in 'stop and go' traffic. After setting the date and time, I can also choose whether (or not) to have the speed stamped on the video. I'm not a cop, so I chose to turn the speed off. I find the quality of the sound to be quite good as well. There are four (recording) video resolutions to choose from as well. I find the menu navigation to be intuitive and compared to other dash cams, it's fairly easy. Since I have a Garmin GPS that has lifetime alerts, the red light camera alerts also show up on the dashcam. This is convenient if my GPS happens to be off. A minor gripe is that the lens has a copper-colored ring around it which negates any chance for stealth factor. If it was all black, it would be a bit harder to notice through the windshield. I learned that there is no option for any kind of add-on ND filter. The computer interface is hit & miss I'm afraid. Once I downloaded the app and linked my dashcam to my laptop, navigation was simple BUT it doesn't save the files in 1, 2 or 3 minute chunks. Let's say you park and leave the cam on. When you view the footage, it could be two and a half hours or more and you'll have to do some creative editing. They should allow us to save footage in 1-3 minute increments to make things easier. So from the time you start recording until you turn the cam off, it will force you to download huge time-consuming files. This needs to be addressed in the software on the computer side. A nice feature (for older vehicles) is the ability to purchase a wireless rear camera for backing up. It takes a bit to set it up and adjust the lane markers, but once it's set, it makes it easier to park and avoid hitting things or people. I just didn't want to run a wire all the way from the back of my SUV. The image can get slightly grainy, but it sure beats hitting another vehicle or stationary object. If you'd like to record footage while your car is parked, buy a "Power Magic Pro." It will ensure you do not drain your battery. While this dashcam is more expensive than most, the features and conveniences make it worth the price of admission. I feel secure in the fact that it's backed by an American company with American tech support. Oh and I also purchased a "Square Trade" extended warranty to really be sure. Overheating: From what I have read, this unit had a problem working in warmer climates. I also read that a firmware upgrade solved the issue.

After the first day of extensive use, I can say that it's a much, much better camera than my old Chinese made unit in every regard. The time lapse feature was a surprise too. When recording a time lapse, it also continues to record as a normal dash cam, as well as having the ability to snap pictures, or save the videos...all at the same time. The voice control is mostly very responsive. I had to yell a bit during the rainstorm today so that it could hear me. But once you call "hey garmin, take a picture", or whatever, its quick to respond. I did disable the lane drifting feature. It seems to be too sensitive, or it was throwing false flags. Perhaps that's something that will be smoothed out in a later firmware update. The only gripe is the requirement to use the official garmin car charging adaptor. All because they want to do that whole propriety thing. So I'm hardwiring the unit into the car fuse panel to keep it clean. The cig adaptor is a definite no go for me. The image quality is Good. The menu system is far far better than my old unit. Very intuitive. Getting the app to link with the camera was a trick. But that was user error. Do yourself a favor and watch a YouTube video, it'll all make sense. All in all, this is a premium camera that deserves an A rating.

UPDATE 2018/06/02: My original review below was written 3 months after purchase. It's now ~5 months since installation and I'm doing a complete 180! Since early May the DC55 has been shutting down during EVERY use and after only a few minutes. My commute is 26 minutes long and the DC55 is down for as many as 18 minutes - that's 70% downtime! That level of unreliability almost assures that any incident I experience will not be recorded. Solutions: (1) My Blackvue DR750S-2CH arrived this morning and I'm installing it this evening, and (2) My Aspen 40' Power Catamaran is being built for delivery in September. Fortunately, it was still early enough in the build to change all $16k in Garmin Navionics to other suppliers without change fees. Anybody can have a product issue, but the lack of response/solution from Garmin on this longstanding and widespread DC55 problem is unforgivable! Strongly recommend against this product! __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2017/04/17: Very satisfied overall with this well built unit. Video quality is excellent and reliability has been perfect over the 3 months I've had it. Recommended CIP targets are increased field of view (180 degrees) with the same video quality and depth of field and reduced power consumption in the "Parking" mode. I also purchased the "Parking" cable and wired it per Garmin's instructions. Contrary to Garmin's claims I've had several low battery warnings, and on one occasion, a dead battery since installing the parked monitoring capability! All instances were after being parked in an airport structure for 24-52 hours. The battery and car are less than 5 months old and a subsequent battery test found no defect. Fortunately I've not had an accident or other circumstance where I would benefit from having the camera, but every indication is that this dash-cam will provide what's needed when the time comes.

I really wanted to like (and keep) this dash cam, but in the end I returned it for a refund and bought a different brand/model. The good: The video quality was great, setup was easy and the small size made it fairly inconspicuous. Both Garmin and Amazon support personnel were very competent and helpful. Some of the best customer support I have ever received. The not-so-good: The app is very no frills. Also, you can’t choose the length of video clips. The ONLY option (which means their really aren’t any options) is 1 minute clips. Why I returned dash cam (I actually returned 2): I received my first one and it started up fine but required an update. I started the update process and it said the unit needed to reboot to finish the update. The problem was that the update didn’t only not finish, it “bricked” the dash cam. I called Garmin support when I couldn’t get the update to finish. After going through their troubleshooting steps with no resolution, they advised me to return it. I then contacted Amazon about an exchange and that process went dry smooth. They sent the replacement overnight. The replacement dash cam completed the update with no problem and worked good for 2 days. Then, it started to overheat (the weather isn’t overly hot) and shut down. It wouldn’t restart until it cooled down completely. I went through this several times and decided I didn’t even want to go through Garmin customer service this time. So, I contacted Amazon and set up a return/refund. Again, Amazon service was great.

PROS: It's a dash cam, it does all the things a dash cam should do and it's tiny and voice activated. VOICE ACTIVATED, and you think "That's stupid, why would I need that?" But you will use the feature; let's say a guy hits you, causes some minor damage to your car, and then attempts to make a run for it. First thing you want to do, save the video, right? This camera has accident awareness and will automatically save the video for you. Alright, next thing: this cam can record in 1440p (for the un-tech initiated, this is higher than 1080P) so all you have to do is get behind the guy and say 'OK Garmin!" then "Take a picture." and it's done, you just got a picture of that guy's license plate. CONS: Sometimes the camera will hear the command line 'OK Garmin.' randomly from the radio so that sucks. If you hit a bump in the road the cam holder will sometimes shift and you have to shift it back to the proper viewing angle. The app designed to view the videos and save them to other media on your phone is incredibly slow.

As a recent purchase, the Garmin works beautifully, although I'm still learning the nuances of some of the automated warnings (dings). I love the small size but big features. It sits at the top left corner of the windshield and does not obstruct my view whatsoever. The GPS unit is actually built into the camera, unlike some others that advertise included GPS but is actually external on the power cord. Connecting through Bluetooth to phone was easy. Picture quality is very good. So far, so good.

Great Product! This is my 2nd dash-cam and a big upgrade from my previous model. Its nice and small. The voice commands are good and the video quality is excellent. The menus are easy to use and setup. I especially like the Red-Light camera warnings it gives me. The only thing I do not like is the sticker windshield window mount. I did do not want to permanently mount it to the windshield so I bought a Garmin compatible suction mount from eBay that fits beautifully. Now I can move it between my cars.

I did extensive homework prior to purchase and found this to be just what I was looking for. In particular, the voice control feature (allowing to take photos, video and timelapse on the fly) is very useful and the image quality is outstanding (which compares to a GoPro imho). After reviewing various conflicting tutorials re. software setup, updates and so forth, I opted to do the following: setup Garmin Express on my PC, then update camera software. Done and done with ease. I then started camera up and cycled through a number of setup options which I believed would only need to be done the one time, but this turned out to not be the case. Hmmm... Every time the camera powered on, these same setup options needed to be re-configured again. Obviously, having to repeat this every time you step into your car is major pain in the rear and would have been a deal breaker. After doing more research and considerable head scratching, I later found out that the camera has to have a proper GPS signal for the initial setup sequence to complete fully. So, depending on your location, this must be done next to a large window or even outdoors (which I was not doing initially as I had camera connected to desktop PC). Nowhere in online help or elsewhere does it mention this major point. In hindsight, the easiest way to complete setup seamlessly, would be to use a laptop (with wifi connection) and take it outside so you can do both the software update and complete the initial setup sequence. The other slightly glitchy issue is with the placement of the camera itself. As I found out the hard way (after having to use the spare sticky pad included in pkg after only a day) placement of the camera completely behind the rear view mirror as is often done by many will in fact compromise the built-in voice recognition system (loss of 5 star rating as a result). If camera is totally hidden, you will likely have to speak loudly and perhaps even have to lean forward for camera to pickup voice properly. If positioned slightly to side or below (with maybe 1/4-1/3 of camera visible) this feature worked very well with normal speaking volume.
