Q: How many bags would I need for a 40 gal?

You need to find out how many cubic inches/centimeters of aggregate material are in the bag and use the formula length x width x depth of your tank to determine how many cubic inches/centimeters that you need to fill the tank to a certain depth. Black sand has a certain volume in cubic inches/centimeters per pound or kilogram. The seller or the Internet will have this mass-per-volume information. I'd check with the seller or look on the bag to find the volume of aggrigate in the bag you want to buy. I hope this was helpful. :-)

Q: Good for bearded dragons?

DO NOT USE SAND/LOOSE SUBTRACTS IN A BEARDED DEAGONS TANKS PLEASE. Sand and loose subtracts causes bearded dragons to become impacted. Best thing to use is tile on the bottom, and even paper towels work if you cant afford paper towel

According to Exo Terra's website:"Exo Terra's Desert Terrarium Sand is natural real desert sand with no added dyes or chemicals. The sand has been sifted to remove impurities and to obtain a homogenous sand grain size."On a personal level, my tarantula loves it. When I got her she was on Peatmoss, but she is a Rose haired tarantula from the Chilean desert. This was a much more natural feel for her and she hunts much more as she would in the wild. Plus the Sand holds heat better. Be aware though; you will need to change this every few months. Critters tend to splash water from their bowl, being in a cage the sand tends to hold moisture a lot. This isn't a huge problem for a lot of reptiles, but for tarantulas it can get to humid. Overall I have liked this product quite well.
