Spoiler-free: Brilliant and very creepy mystery!
This is a great but very creepy story. Pete, Nancy and Krish are in their biology lesson at school when they hear a plane crash nearby in their village of Crooked Oak. After school they decide to cycle to the crash site but the road is cut off and strange people dressed in black suits are guarding the way to the plane. Luckily Krish lives at Dunwick Farm and suggests they go there as it lies near the back of the crash site, but soon after getting a glimpse of something there, strange things start happening to the animals in Crooked Oak including all the animals on Krish’s farm.I’ve enjoyed the first two books in the series so far and this standalone third book is so good and filled with a lot of mystery and some truly creepy moments. Something odd is happening at the crash site and soon strange things start happening around the local area. Something is affecting the animals, and some people, and the three friends try their best to investigate. I love how this story focuses more on Krish and his family, and we find out more about his sister and animals too.I won’t give away what happens but once something is revealed it’s a super creepy read. I have to say that I found this particular book extra scary as I really don’t like the crawling things mentioned in the story and the illustrations really added to that creepy atmosphere so well. There are several pictures dotted throughout the book and they are all in black, white and grey and look so good. They show the expressions and what’s happening so well and some of the pictures towards the end are extra creepy! This book is especially dyslexia-friendly having under 120 pages of text, which itself is made from a special font for dyslexics. The text is also bigger in size and has separated paragraphs. The paper it’s printed on is thick with a yellow tint to it making this easier to read for dyslexics and some people with visual problems too. And being such a short book it’s great for reluctant readers too.The story builds up to a great and exciting ending with the final chapter putting a smile on my face. Overall this is another great standalone story in the Crooked Oak Mysteries series. You don’t have to have read the previous books to enjoy this one, but it is a good read for the spooky season and for any children wanting to read a creepy mystery story.-Thanks to Barrington Stoke for a free copy.
