Q: What do we do when the deodorant breaks off from the base unit?

This happened to me too. I am currently using duct tape which only works so well. I think they need to reengineer something.

Dove Refillable Deodorant is made with a highly durable stainless steel base. In order to keep the formulas fresh and hygienic, plastic is still currently necessary in the refill packs. 98% of the plastic used in our Dove Refillable Deodorants is now made from recycled plastic.

Q: What prevents the whole deodorant cube from breaking off when using?

I had the same problems as many folks with the first cube I used. It broke off fairly soon after I began using it. Dove SAYS they will replace broken cubes, but I could not get them to respond to my inquiries. I had given up on the product, but later decided I would try again. I have found that if you apply it by holding the stick longways, it doesn't break as easily. I have almost completely finished one cube, and it is still intact. I am also careful not to use too much pressure when applying the product. I like the product because it creates less waste than other deodorants, but also because I have very sensitive skin. I've never had any irritation using this product.
