is it still necesary to smoke the hide after using this product?

Not unless you want the hide to be a darker color. For a chemical tanning formula, this stuff works pretty good. I have used 3 bottles.

What is the shelf life of this product?

I hope quite a while as I still have the bottle I purchased. Im pretty sure it will last a long time especially if you havnt opened it but even then I bet it will still be good. I know I have used it in the past on rabbit hides, coon, coyote and it was through quite a span in time. I bet its as good as when you bought it. Shake it up good before using.

The tanning solution got in the fur of my bear hide all around the edges and on the head. Is there a way to clean the sticky residue from the fur?

It will eventually dry, and should brush out.
