It will work on wood however I would test a small area for when you remove it it may take off some finish.

I can get the first layer off and then adhere to sofa. How do I then get the top layer off??

You have to get between the two layers. I found picking a corner and working with it until I got it to separate was the best. Once you have it started it goes really fast AND you find it easier each time.
