Same with mine. Must be the '04-'06 model that came stock with a 4 book compendium, before going back to the two bibliophile model, to save on gastronomical dilemmas... :>)

Not enough to notice. and it's only lockable if you don't tilt the board more than 33°. It definitely keeps them from moving around, but you may be looking for the "locking" or "magnetic" version, where you can fold the board up during a game and continue later. But the pieces are clearly marked (better than my old wooden tiles, but being 40+ years old they are in that "fade away" period of life. ~empathy~) and solidly built, so any problems with handling or reading will be comparable to your old tiles.
